Burgundy and Blush Quilt

Romantic Stitches: Introducing the Burgundy and Blush Quilt.

Like me, I always have another fabric project asking me what it's doing. So, sit down, grab a cup of tea, and I have to say I was hooked on this free pattern, I just had to share it with my quilting community! Introducing the Burgundy and Blush Quilt created by the fabulous Monique Jacobs from Maywood Studio and graciously offered for free download by our friends at the Bear Creek Quilting Company.

The richness of dark, moody wines paired with light, romantic pastels is so simple and classic. Monique Jacobs (also of Open Gate Quilts) has a wonderful sense of style and approachable construction. In this design she uses one of Maywood Studio's spectacular Burgundy and Blush fabrics. There is a lot of sweet rosebuds, trailing vines, ditsy berries and modern geometric dots paired with warm ecru and cream backgrounds.

Why is this pattern a good one to add to your "to make" list? All about placement of values! With clever placement of the piecing, Monique manages to make the most of the contrast between the rich, dark burgundies, and the light, whispery pinks.

The quilt appears to be a wonderful visual depth, highlighted by the use of a mix of high-contrast floral motifs and crisp, lighter backgrounds. The overall design is a great depth of field, with some high-contrast floral patterns alternating with lighter, crisp backgrounds. There is no need for those crazy blocks to give you a high-end, boutique look – the clever fabric arrangement takes the drama out of the design.

If you look at the project details, you'll see why it's such a rewarding activity to sew:
  • Precut Friendly: The design fits well into pre-cut collections of any size, such as 10-inch squares or 2.5-inch strips, reducing your preparation time significantly.
  • Clear Unit Construction: The beautifully illustrated pattern diagrams will walk you through all of the strip cutting needs and piecing sequences.
  • Great versatility – it can be made into a beautiful, sophisticated throw for a living room couch, and then it's just a few more borders to make it a full-sized bed quilt.

Final Thought
I am so attracted to the colors of a palette such as burgundy and blush because there is so much versatility to them that they'll work well throughout the seasons. The rich, deep hues lend a reassuring, solid feel to the quilt, ideal for cozying up with in the fall and winter, and the light pink florals ensure it will seamlessly look spring-like when it's time to change the colors. It is one of those few designs that doesn't just go on the back of a couch, it truly takes the room to another level.

This is a project that will become an heirloom, whether you follow the entire Maywood Studio range of fabrics or get creative and use coordinating fabrics on your own shelf. Sometimes the most traditional combinations create the most spectacular looks!
