Black-Eyed Susan Block

Back to the sewing room everyone! Floral blocks are always a welcome change of season, and I'm always looking for ones to take a bit of the sunny outdoors onto our cutting tables. Those who enjoy the classic blocks with a sunny personality will adore today's featured project.

This is the classic Black-Eyed Susan quilt block, created by Wendy Russell at PatchworkSquare and it is a block wonderfully versatile to work with. This design is a beautiful rendition of the traditional wildflower using ingenious geometric piecing to achieve that lovely 'bloom'.

It is the sharp angles that add depth to this particular block configuration. The dark center square, which has a grounding effect, is contrasted with the radiating yellow petals that give it an incredibly dynamic appearance. Look at the green accent triangles at the outside corners, which perfectly enclose the bloom, as if the flower has leaves.

This block will be a happy stitching block to use in an exciting table runner or to gather up a full garden quilt for scrap-busting. Take out those beloved gold, amber and forest green fat quarters and let's get cutting!
