| Mystery Quilt Block 6 |
For those of you following along with The Mystery Quilt designed by the talented Monique Dillard of Open Gate Quilts, it's time for the release of the 6th block! The end blocks are the magic blocks in any mystery quilt along! Block 6 is a crucial element that seamlessly connects the other blocks and leads to the ultimate unveiling of the design.
Block 6: A Design Overview
Crafted using a smart approach, Monique Dillard is adored for her traditional designs that are timeless. Precision piecing is emphasized in this block, challenging quilters with precision.
The design is based on the contrast between strong angles and different values. It includes basic units of quilting that use precise 1/4" seam allowances and precise cutting to ensure all points match up. It is important to remember that the color placement for Block 6 is not random as it is part of a mystery design and is intended to lead the eye across the completed quilt top, creating secondary patterns when the quilt top is completed.
A few words of advice to help you succeed:
The following three steps will make piecing this block a breeze:
- Label Your Pieces: When you have several pieces going, you don't have to make any mistakes by keeping track of your light, medium and dark cuts.
- Press with care: When it comes to the corners of the seams open or to the dark side as directed; this will minimize bulk where the seams meet.
- Square Up Regularly: Cut your units so they fit before joining the other pieces together to make the block so that it fits with your other blocks.
