Mystery Quilt Block 8

All of this and more, finally! This is the Block 8 overview in The Mystery Quilt, creatively designed by the fabulous Monique Dillard from Open Gate Quilts. We're at the end of the final block of this 8-part journey, and it is absolutely incredible. We have been piecing, pressing and cutting out some lovely geometric designs this past few weeks! With the last block in hand, we are now at the very end of the grand reveal where all of our hard work is put together in a finished, beautiful quilt top!

The technical focus is on final accuracy and pre assembly preparation.
Block 8 is the last of the puzzle, and again requires the same attention to detail that was used from Block 1. The units for this week will be used to finish our block collection and to prepare us for a perfect block layout. This last square is so important that we will be joining up all of our blocks at the end, so it is all the more important to have it square.

The seam allowances can also wander back and forth even by a half-inch, if so, the final blocks may pucker, stretch or lose points during the stitching. Keep that regular and minute $1/4” seam allowance for your last seams. After completing this block, the focus of your technical work should be to ensure that the unfinished measurements of all eight blocks are the same as those specified in the pattern.

Block 8 and beyond: Success Tips for the Lead Applicator
As you finish your block construction, you can use the following tips to help you get a smooth assembly:
  • Carefully measure all eight of your finished blocks—this is what is called the Final Square-Up. If any are slightly bigger, cut so that they are exactly the unfinished size. Some may be just a little too small and a light steam press may do the trick to spread them out just a bit.
  • Stay Organized: use your design wall to organize your blocks by number or colorway. This makes an end-user assembly process very satisfying and very easy.
  • Prepare Your Sashing and Borders: If you will be creating sashing, cornerstones, or borders, cut them out ahead of time and await the final presentation of the layout.

Final Thoughts
It's a huge accomplishment when you reach the end of the blocks. However, if you selected a coordinated designer fabric pull or went with a beautifully scrappy appearance, you ought to be very proud. Monique Dillard has created an experience we will never forget – a mystery!
