| Hexagon Park Quilt by Julie Hirt |
Here is another fun quilt pattern break down! We are going to be looking at a new, crisp, contemporary layout today from talented quilt designer Lynne Goldsworthy from Lily's Quilts, the Hexagon Park Quilt.
This brilliant pattern is perfect for those who adore the traditional hexagon style of quilting but don't have a lot of time to spend on a messy "Y-seam" or tedious English Paper Piecing (EPP). Lynne cuts pre-cut fabrics into half-hexagons and uses clean solid sashing, resulting in an interesting floating-hexie effect that is pieced together well with typical straight-seam machine-piecing.
Key Pattern Specifications & Requirements
- Finished Size: Sofa quilt is 70″ x 80″ (approx. 178 cm x 203 cm) in size and has a generous throw.
- Skill Level: Intermediate (best for quilters comfortable with 60 degree angle cuts and 1/4” seam allowances).
- Fabric Requirements:
- Quilt Top Prints: (1) Layer Cake (30 precut 10″ x 10″ squares used for hexies and the rest of the squares in the pieced border).
- There are 2½ yards of solid white cotton (Moda Bella Solids for example) required for Background & Sashing.
- Backing & binding: 5 yards of backing/½ yards of binding.
Pattern Breakdown & Construction Tips
- Pre-Cut Prep & Smart Trimming: The 10″ squares are folded in half horizontally and then a strip of 1″ is cut off from the center and the resulting two 4½” x 10” rectangle pieces are trimmed.
- Angled Cut-Offs: With the acrylic ruler, cut the bottom corners of the squares, creating two half-hexagons and four small accent triangles per square. Keep those side triangles—they will be used to create the side edges of the quilt layout!
- The sashing and row piecing consist of the 1¼" white strips laid on top and bottom of the half-hexagons. The pieces are then segregated into top and bottom piles, then all the pieces are joined together with 2″ vertical sashing strips and then the block sections are joined together in straight horizontal rows.
- Borders & Finishing: Quilt is finished with a solid white inner border, a lovely outer border of alternating 5” print square and white sashing, and a final solid white border.
Final Thought
The Hexagon Park Quilt is an ingenious mixture of some old fashioned geometry and new streamlined piecing. It provides a slow pace row by row assembly, which highlights the colors of the fabrics. Or take your favorite Layer Cake and get your cutting mat set to 60 degrees and start stitching up this fabulous 70″ x 80″ masterpiece for your home!
