Handcraft Quilt by Katarina Roccella – Timeless Elegance – An introduction to Handcraft Quilt.
The Handcraft Quilt is the next ideal quilt if you've ever dreamed of combining old-fashioned 19th century romanticism with clean, modern patchwork. This quilt is a stunning display of Art Gallery Fabrics Studio's incredibly talented Katarina Roccella's Picturesque collection. With a unique William Morris influence, rich with lush florals, intricate linoleum prints and studies of botany, Katarina's gift for textile storytelling is rooted in classic European elegance.

You can cut into your favorite fat quarters knowing what you want your pattern to look like before you cut by seeing how the fabric will be used. The colour palette in the Picturesque collection is a perfect balance between vintage and contemporary with a mix of deep, moody midnight blues and forest greens, alongside delicate blush and warm mimosa yellows.

The Handcraft Quilt pattern's appeal lies in its ability to allow these intricate prints to breathe through the classic geometric structures it includes. A detailed analysis of the technical structure of pattern instructions reveals the presence of very efficient and streamlined methods of assembly, which help to control the pattern's complicated appearance.

The most important technical points of the Pattern.
Here are the essential fabric pull and cutting mat pieces that make up the backbone of this gorgeous project to help you plan your fabric pull and cutting mat strategy!
  • Instead of making individual half-square triangles (HSTs), the pattern is made using the very efficient Magic 8 technique. Simply sew together 6" squares of your main prints and background fabrics, draw the diagonal lines, and sew a ¼” seam on each corner to create eight beautiful 2½" x 2½" HSTs at a time! The blueprint calls for 56 HSTs to be used from the central fabric pairings to ensure consistency of the design.
  • The precise arrangement of sixteen structural blocks is the key to the heart of the quilt, this is known as Graded Row Architecture. The vertical rows of each individual block are carefully designed with five different types. The rows are a combination of your newly pressed HSTs and sequentially graded strips of fabric, from 2½” to 8½”, that give a stunning sweeping look across the top of your quilt.
  • Sleek and minimalistic, the Finishing Edge marks the end of the design when the top is complete and squared. The pattern calls for 1½” wide strips of Fabric H to be seamed together to create a strong 310” continuous binding loop.

Final Thought
The Handcraft Quilt is not only a precision quilt, but it's also a great lesson in precision quilt block, with clever use of a very detailed fabric line. The Magic 8 technique and a bit of planning will guide you through this complex, yet vintage-inspired garden in rapid fashion.
