| Ambrosia Quilt Bag by Amanda Murphy |
Greetings all you quilters! When you notice your fabric stash is encroaching on your sewing room, I have the ideal weekend project for you to make your sewing room look pretty! Today it's time for a classic quilt bag that's so well designed it's a perfect blend of style, structure, and pure usefulness--the Ambrosia Quilt Bag by the super talented Amanda Murphy of Amanda Murphy Design.
This pattern was originally designed to feature her colorful "Ambrosia" fabric line for Robert Kaufman, it's a dream come true for those who want to step outside of the traditional quilting world and into the realm of fashion and bags.
The innovative contrast and texture is what makes this tote unique from a regular bag. The front has deep, accordion style pockets as you can see in the photo. They are not only great to use for stuffing in your phone, wallet or for a quick knitting project, they are made using two different fabrics, one being the main fabric and the other being the contrast print. Now, when you fold and press the pleats, you'll have these pretty and delicate pops of color popping, adding instant designer bags.
The magic for quilters, however, is in the main body panels. Pattern is to stitch the major parts together and then add batting and muslin to them before sewing them together. This is a very low pressure playground for practicing free-motion quilting (the method of lowering the feed dogs on your machine and moving the fabric as you create custom designs). The final interior lining will fully cover the back of your utility stitching, so you can be extremely bold! It's the perfect canvas for trying out a new swirl, pebble or feather pattern without the pressure of creating a full-size heirloom quilt.
With robust shoulder straps, functional D rings and a spacious flat base, the Ambrosia Bag is as robust as it is striking. Take some coordinating fat quarters from your stash, and spin it!
