My friend, I am so excited to pass on to you the awesome pattern for the Spin Me Round Quilt by the fabulous creative minds of Patty Young and Emalee Grambo from MODKID, LLC.
With this pattern, whether you want to make a super eye-catching wall hanging or a warm modern lap quilt, you'll get a gorgeous illusion of spinning pinwheels. The best part? Super approachable! So let's take a look at all the reasons why this pattern is a quilting must have!
There is an important message from the Pattern.
But before you get your cutting mat and rotary cutter out, here are some nitty-gritty details you should know about the Spin Me Round quilt:
- Finished Quilt Size: This pattern makes a square quilt that is 46" x 46" in size. This is a very flexible size so you can make a baby quilt, a colorful throw for your favorite chair to read on or a show-stopper wall hanging to brighten up a room!
- Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced quilting skills are recommended. The shapes are done in dynamic geometry, which appears complicated and intricate on the surface, but is actually simple if you keep your eye on the cuts and allowances for the seams.
- Fabric Requirements: This pattern is very strip intensive! You will need (14) 4.5" x 40" strips of quilting cotton for the main quilt top and (1) 11.5" square for the center focal point; and (1) 54" long x the full width of fabric for the backing (or several additional pieces for pieced backing). (In the original sample, Patty Young used 14 different prints from the Rendezvous fabric collection from Jo-Ann Fabrics for her top). Finally, you'll require (5) 2.5" strips to use as binding.
- Design & Construction: The magic of the design Patty Young and Emalee Grambo have created is how it is put together. Rather than stitching the tiny individual half-square stitches, you sew your 14 strips into larger grouped rectangles and cut them on a precise diagonal to sew around your large 11.5" center square, resulting in that amazing sweeping "spin" effect with little aggravation!
Choices in fabric and what to do for success!
Contrast is your best friend when you want to really make the "spin" effect "pop". The designers suggest splitting your 14 strips into two sets based on color – for instance, all warm reds and cool blues, and a few neutral grays in between. As you choose your fabrics, consider using a similar color temperature range (cool/neutral vs warm/neutral) or light/neutral vs. dark/neutral so that the spinning movement can be seen as a clear contrast to the center square.
As soon as you cut your strip sets on the diagonal you will have to deal with bias edges, so be careful not to stretch your fabric. Press your seams well, always pressing away from the center square to minimise the bulk, and press 1/4" seam allowance throughout.
Final Thought
Few fabrics will be cut into such a creative combination as in MODKID, LLC's Spin Me Round quilt pattern. A very satisfying project that is very quick to make but really looks great.
