Candy Hearts Quilt Pattern designed by Amber Johnson
Candy Hearts Quilt

While Valentine's Day may only happen once a year, our love for heart quilts is a year round thing! Amber Johnson, from Gigi's Thimble, created this adorable, happy, quick-to-make quilt pattern that's just a sewing must-have if you're looking for a lovely project that makes you giggle.

This sweet pattern is designed as a beloved feature in the Moda Bakeshop line, but it can also be used as a guest candy pattern. It's a pattern that would make a delightful addition to the Moda Bakeshop line, but is also perfect for a guest candy pattern. This is sweet, gorgeous and very beginner friendly.

Why We Love This Pattern
What makes the Candy Hearts pattern stand out is its clever use of pre-cuts and straightforward raw-edge appliqué technique. Amber knows how to avoid the difficult curve piecing to make those nice heart shapes with this project, so she uses a custom template. You just trace, cut and stick the motifs on your background strips.

The edges fray a little after the quilt is finished, giving it a nice vintage look and feel that is very broken in the first wash. If you've always wanted to start machine appliqué without a lot of learning, then it will be a terrific confidence builder.

Pattern Overview & Materials
While you're preparing to remove everything from your cutting table, let's take a look at what you'll need to get started on this sweet layout. This design completes the project into a highly functional throw size of 45" x 54" that is ideal for a festive wall hanging, for a cheerful lap quilt or for a beautiful baby gift.

I consolidated the basic fabric needs from the design into the following list:
  • The Hearts: 1, or exactly (35) 5" square “scrap” from your stash.
  • Background Fabric: Use a light, contrasting fabric that will make your colored squares really stand out—1 1/2 yards of fabric.
  • Sashing Strips: (6) 2 1/2" x 45" strips of a coordinating accent fabric to frame your rows.
  • Fun Accents: 7 yards of ric-rac trim to help give your sashing the perfect whimsy in the middle.
  • Finishing Touches: 1/2 yard of fabric for binding and 3 yards of fabric for backing.

Final Thoughts
The Candy Hearts quilt is a lesson in design fundamentals that can produce amazing, warm results. Amber Johnson's pattern offers plenty of room for personal expression, whether you want to raid your scrap bins for a multi-colored scrappy look, or keep your palette of romantic pinks and reds more in check. Quick, storage friendly and addictively easy to assemble.
