Spruce Up Your Sewing Room with the Vintage Caravan Sewing Machine Cover

But how many times do we find ourselves sewing something just to make our own creative oasis look pretty? I think a lot of people have been wanting to give a customization and whimsy to their sewing table, and this project is perfect for them to try today: Vintage Caravan Sewing Machine Cover.
This fun project is more than a functional dust cover to keep your equipment dust free, it's a little, cuddly little retro camper that will make you smile a lot, every time you enter your room.
This masterpiece was created with the original pattern and tutorial by the incredibly talented Janine of Rainbow Hare. These details; little windows, a sweet door on the side and a good old-fashioned curve in her roof are just a few that make her design a perfect interpretation of a classic travel trailer's charm in a nostalgic way.
- Cover Measurements: When complete the cover will be about 20″ long x 13″ high x 9″ deep. This is suitable for the majority of domestic sewing machines and is also quite large for the type of machine.
- Materials required: A main feature print for the top of the caravan, a solid fabric to make the lower half for a classic two tone retro look, backing fabric and fun scraps for windows and door.
- The sewing machine cover is designed to be free-standing, as it has to maintain its shape. The pattern assures this sturdy construction with three layers of wadding (batting) between the backing and the main body fabrics.
- Key Construction Steps: The process of constructing a thick quilt sandwich on the main quilt panels, basting and quilting the body, and meticulously adding the curved edges to the roof piece. One of the highlights is the use of clever paper folding and cardstock windows and foil to make crisp, perfectly round windows!
Brilliant Modifications by Ginger Peach Studio
In this case Janine's original pattern is fantastic, but part of the fun of our craft is seeing how other artisans rework a pattern. Jenn Rossotti from Ginger Peach Studio took up this pattern for her own studio, and brought it to another level with some ingenious structural changes that are game-changers.
To add more structure and professionalism to the caravan, Jenn did the following hacks:
- Quilted Lining & Bound Seams: Jenn chose to have a completely quilted inside lining and bound all the raw edges inside with bias, instead of lining with a drop-in. This does require a bit more time, but the inside is really nice.
- Reinforced Base: She reinforced the bottom edge binding with heavy gauge steel wires to ensure the camper would stand straight and tall. This great little trick gets rid of all sag bottom edges.
- Added Handle: She attached a robust fabric handle to the roof for the easy lifting, one-handed.
Final Thought
That's a sewing machine cover from the Vintage Caravan, no question, but the end result is definitely worth all the work. It pushes you to include a show-stopping amount of dimensional sewing, curves and finishing in the structure, creating studio decor. Follow the original instructions from Rainbow Hare as written, or take some brilliant structural improvements from Ginger Peach Studio—either way, it's a project that's sure to bring you joy.
