| Amish Star Block |
It's time for another blog post, quilters! Today, if you enjoy crisp lines, and a great contrast in colors, you'll be in for a treat! This is such a lovely historic favorite, Amish Star Quilt Block.
Traditionally, Amish quilts feature strong, deep-colored solid fabrics with deep black or navy quilting blocks. In this traditional format, the streamlined abstractism of this geometry is the focal point, while the busy prints are removed. The best part of piecing an Amish Star is that you get to experience that same simplicity and show.
Don't let its intricate look fool you. However, this layout is very structured and easy to learn, and is hidden beneath all that lovely flair. It cuts into easily recognizable quilt squares:
Half-Square Triangles (HSTs): Cuts to be used for making the crisp outer diamond frames.
Flying Geese Units: These are beautiful second-line directions to the points of the star.
A Solid Center Square: The ideal foundation for your color palette.
The block is designed to be a 12" square when they are arranged into a standard 9" by 9" block. The block is designed to be a beautiful 12" block when set up in a 9" block.
The thing that's fun about this layout is how it will act when you connect several blocks together. It is cleverly laid out so that a second "square-in-a-square" layout forms throughout your quilt top when you lay your blocks together. You can go with the classics of solid jewel tones or give it a contemporary twist with your favorite scrapy prints—it's an extremely rewarding pattern to put together.
