Welcome back to the sewing room, ladies and gillies! Occasionally, you'll find a quilt pattern that halts you in your tracks. So it was when I saw the beautiful "I Fall to Pieces" quilt for the first time. This masterpiece was originally introduced in Quilting Daily (and later published in Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting) and is a natural mix of geometric precision and stunning color contrast.
Angie Milligan had a brilliant idea and Rita Swain did the work, and Lisa Beeso the longarm machine quilted it to perfection. These gifted creators have shared with us an exemplary example of how a combination of smart fabric selection can create a modern show-stopper from old-fashioned shapes.

On the surface, this seems like a very complicated layout, but this is the best-kept secret of us quilters—it's fairly accessible! All magic is based on clever color placement. The design features a single basic pinwheel block variation that's created in three different colorways. The same set of fabrics is then rotated and shifted around within the blocks, producing another optical illusion that is visible at a second glance.
Let's discuss the most important technical aspects of the pattern:
Finished Size: A grand 97" x 117", making it a majestic, statement-making bed quilt.
The Palette: A bold assortment of bold primary blue and accent green with a dramatic black backdrop.
Framing & Sashing: It includes beautiful sashing and custom pieced cornerstones that will lead the viewer across the piece.
The Border: The entire piece is beautifully framed in a border print in primary colors of blue and green to echo the colors.
The blues and greens don't just stand out on the fabric—these stand out from the fabric. Finally Lisa Beeso's machine quilting brings it all together, creating a wonderful tactile texture for the patchwork that complements the sharp points.
Final Thought
The best thing about the "I Fall to Pieces" quilt is that it's so versatile! The blue, green and black colors are a masterstroke, but you can also choose to change black to a soothing charcoal gray or even a nice cream to make the quilt into a totally different character. This pattern is for those who like to play weekend projects, but don't want to get too much into templates. Now get your rotary cutter and choose two colors that you love and start peicing!
