Friends, it's time to return to the sewing room! When I think of something that I truly enjoy as a quilter, it's getting into the nitty-gritty of quilt block design and pattern analysis. From fabric manipulation with classic blocks to new and complex layouts, the joy of watching flat yardage come to life is never ending. I am so excited to share with you today one of the most beautiful patterns I've ever seen that is a great mix of the old and the new: the Sentimentalities Quilt by Bonnie Christine and Maxine Ramey from Art Gallery Fabrics.

It's quite a beautiful pattern and when you first see it it brings a sweet nostalgia to mind, aptly, as it makes use of the stunning Reminisce fabric collection. The quilt is inspired by the old-fashioned Dresden Plate, and uses clever strip-piecing to make a stunning radiating starburst effect. A truly ingenious idea for cutting and application of fabric to fill a complicated design and create an amazing focal point using just a little yardage.

Key Details from the Sentimentalities Pattern.
Once you understand the key information of this project, you can prepare yourself for pulling fabrics from your stash, or planning your colorway:
  • When finished, this quilt will measure a generous 66" × 66" and is a statement quilt to hang on a wall or a perfect size for a cozy throw for that reading chair.
  • The Magic Tool: A 24" 9 degree wedge ruler is needed to create the amazing radial pattern. This particular angle will enable you to make 40 wedges to cover the full circle. (A great pattern idea: If only a 10 degree ruler is available, it can be very easily modified by cutting 36 wedges, with each quadrant of the ruler being 9 degrees instead of 10!)
  • Construction Method: Perfectly cut diamonds are used in only one single part of the design, all other parts are built from strip pieces. You will be making long strip sets of your fabrics, pressing them very carefully and then cutting out with your wedge ruler. This is a great technique to guarantee consistency and save time in the cutting mat.
  • Quadrant Assembly: The high-quality large circle piece is ingeniously made in four quadrants. Wedges are appliqued on a 24" background square with each quadrant of wedges. The applied edges are done with a clean dimension when the wedges are turned right side out with a fold-and-stitch pointed edge using this method, as the edge looks very professional once it is appliquéd down.
  • The center opening, where the wedges all meet is finished off nicely with a simple appliqued circle of fabric. Lastly, inner, middle and outer borders frame the entire starburst and help complete the quilt size.

Final Thought
The Sentimentalities Quilt is a fantastic quilt for quilters who want to work on their precision cutting and appliqué abilities. This pattern, which Bonnie Christine and Maxine Ramey have laid out, makes wedge rulers a simple, satisfying sew. This is the project you've been wanting to make that pushes your fabric manipulation skills to the next level and is a true heirloom. Then, grab your rotary cutter, select a gorgeous fabric bundle and have fun creating this beautiful design!
