The Boston Star Block

The Boston Star Block by Shea's Little Boutique

Traditional patchwork, love it or hate it, you're going to love the Boston Star Block. This bold, bold 12" block was created by the creative team at Erik Homemade Design Studio and it was originally released in the very popular Benjamin Franklin Mystery Quilt.

The Boston Star's unique feature is its stunning visual appeal combined with its easy assembly. The center star appears to be made of tricky, advanced diamond piecing, at first glance. The pattern cleverly replaces elaborate geometry with simple Half-Square Triangles (HSTs) and Square-in-a-Square units, though. It's a project that is very beginner-friendly for those who like to sew, but still very satisfying for more advanced quilters to create as a piece of geometry.

It's a classic pattern that always looks great paired with a classic three-color scheme and neutral background, ideal for a classic, Americana look with deep blues, rich reds and warm creams. But its versatility is where the fun really starts. The block is finished at an ample 12" square, making it a dream for custom projects:

Use a matching border for just one block to create a pretty table topper or small wall hanging.
Use three blocks to create a striking and easy-to-stitch dining room accent in the form of table runners.
Full Heirlooms: Block Multiplication: Make an eye-catching, complex full-size quilt, easily pieced together on a larger grid of blocks.

You can keep with the classics or you can rummage through your fabric scraps and create a much color scheme. The Boston Star block will be a great backdrop for your favorite fabrics, whether you choose to use them in their traditional colors or create a blended one. Now it's time to use your rotary cutter, set that perfect quarter-inch seam allowance and start adding a beautiful dose of old-school stardust to your next quilt!
