The design and construction process is intelligent and effective.
The beauty of the Dashing Quilt is Janice Averill's clever strip piecing technique. Each pattern is based on a series of strip sets that contain a small number of strips crosscut into very specific segments, instead of hundreds of tiny individual pieces:
  • Two Core Blocks (Block A & Block B): 16 blocks with 8 blocks of Block A and 8 blocks of Block B, where each block is 10" x 10". These two block variations are repeated in a 4x4 arrangement with strips of sashing in between to form a dashing, woven pathway over the surface of the quilt.
  • Strip Sets (AC, BD, EF): You will be sewing strips of Width of Fabric (WOF) together, using 1¼" sashing strips, 3⅜" and 6⅜" accent strips and then sub-cut these into 3" and 10". This can help maintain clean seam joins and drastically reduce assembly time.
  • The quilt design is laid out using thin accent sashing (1¼") and a large 4½" outer print sashing (Fabric H) with corner blocks to create a modern traditional frame around the finished top 54¼" x 54¼".

Fabric & Cutting Notes for Success
  • Smooth 10" blocks with Accurate ¼" Seam Allowances: Because the blocks are based on nesting strips that are cut into strip-set segments, it is important to keep the seam consistent at ¼" for smoothness when joining the 10" blocks with the sashing strips.
  • Pressing Direction: Pay attention to the pressing instructions in the pattern—direct pressing towards darker accent strips will make seams nest together when the pattern is assembled.
  • Generous Backing: The pattern calls for a 62" x 62" backing piece, allowing your longarm quilter or home machine quilter to have plenty of room around all four edges.
