Quilting friends, here are a few tips for you. I have a special treat for you today if you're into pairing the classic blocks with bright, modern fabrics. We're going to explore a wonderfully small and super-charged pattern... The House That Kaffe Built.
This project, created by the gifted Kathryn Patterson and available as a Web Bonus in Quilting Daily, is a beautiful example of color and accuracy. The pattern was originally conceived from a traditional quilt seen in McCall's Vintage Quilts (Fall 1997) but Kathryn has added a spectacular modern flair by using the colorful prints by the world renowned Kaffe Fassett.
What is unique about this pattern?
This is a special lap quilt. An awesome curiosity that will only get to 17 ½" x 20 ⅝" finished size. This whole quilt is created from 30 cute School House blocks that are each a super-small 2 ½" x 2 ½" size!
For such a small scale, the pattern is created using foundation paper piecing to get those crisp perfect points. This is a project of intermediate to advanced difficulty level, but the results are truly spectacular! If you like the attention to detail and satisfaction you get from paper piecing, you'll love seeing these tiny little cottages magically appear under the needle of your sewing machine!
The fabric pulls are really fun, too. Kathryn chose 15 different prints for the houses and white solid backgrounds for the buildings. She also installed grey and rust chimneys, and used black and yellow windows to each little home give its own personality. Even the pattern implies feathered tree motifs for machine quilting in the sashing, for a touch of elegancy.
Final Thought
The mini quilts are a great canvas to play with the loudest and boldest fabrics. Even the smallest blocks can make a huge visual impact as seen in The House That Kaffe Built.
