Sawtooth Ladder Block

Sawtooth Ladder Block FREE PDF PATTERN designed by Wendy Russell from PatchworkSquare
Sawtooth Ladder Block

The Sawtooth Ladder block adds geometric interest and contrast to a quilt top without requiring a ton of time at the cutting board. The block combines the sharp points of traditional sawtooth piecing with the clean, rhythmic lines of a ladder motif, designed by Wendy Russell from PatchworkSquare. It's a sampler and a centerpiece that's really fun to stitch as it moves so beautifully in the quilt.

Block At A Glance
  • Designer: Wendy Russell (PatchworkSquare)
  • Finished Size: 12" x 12" square (12.5" unfinished)
  • Structure: 4×4 grid design of simple patchwork elements
  • Core Elements: Half-Square Triangles (HSTs) and solid framing squares
  • This course is designed for confident beginners to intermediate level.
Design Highlights & Piecing Workflow
The efficiency of Wendy Russell's layout is what makes it satisfying. The construction is precise, and you can make the unit assembly easy and predictable:
  • Stash Friendly: Great for two high contrast solids, or a light background with medium to dark scraps.
  • Secondary Patterns: The outermost points line up in the layout when stitched side-by-side creating interlocking diamond and ladder chains on the quilt top.
  • The block is very dependent on the repeating HST units and plain squares and as such having consistent quarter-inch seam allowances ensures flat and square blocks each time.

Pro Tip for Precise Points
When using Half-Square Triangles to trim and square up before assembly, be sure to trim and square up your Half-Square Triangles before final assembly without losing the corner points. Bulk can be minimized by pressing seams towards the darker fabric or seams open where more than one seam meet. Get your rotary cutter, choose two different fabrics from your stash and let's get this old fashion block on to your sewing table!

Falling in Love with Fabric: An Introduction to the Yours Truly Quilt
As a quilter, nothing beats the joy of finding a fabric collection that resonates with your heartfelt feelings. Anyone who has been making fabric has experienced that situation of holding a lovely piece of fabric and waiting for the right pattern to make it look its very best. It is time to share an idea that has had me so totally fascinated I can't help but think about it, any time I can: The absolutely stunning Yours Truly Quilt. The pattern was created by the wonderful Becca Plymale at Art Gallery Fabrics and it's an essential to add to your sewing list! The Magic of the Love Letters Collection.
The heart of the Yours Truly Quilt is its materials! This pattern features the stunning Becca Plymale Love Letters fabric collection, and it's all about love song to the eyes. Soft, feminine florals, charming vintage-inspired designs and gentle handwritten letters to be sure, all fill the collection and bring a sense of comfort to a time gone by.

The palette is an indulgent and elegant mix of dreamy blush pinks, warm creams, deep teals and subtle sparkling golds. This mix is just enough elegance to add a nice touch to the interior design. Quilters know as well as anyone that the feel of a quilt is as important as the look and Art Gallery Fabrics' quilting cotton is made from the highest quality fabrics and has a premium soft drape that will make any quilt look irresistibly soft and will create a cozy, romantic effect in any room!

This class consists of impressive size and approachable techniques.
Gorgeous fabric isn't the only reason the Yours Truly Quilt is so appealing; it is also the super smart design that is so easy to use! This quilt is a good size, measuring 84½" x 87½". It will be the ideal item to drape with style over a bed for a cool new spring look, or to fold up and place over the sofa in the living room for when everyone wants to cuddle up under something cozy for a family movie night.

It is a very large and complex pattern with a geometric design, but it is surprisingly easy to create. What makes it so fast is the amount of strip piecing technique used in its design. Strip piecing is a total lifesaver for people like me who want a stunning finish, but don't have the time to hem and pin small individual squares. This makes it easy to get the quilt top to “paper-hang” together. The Love Letters prints are so pretty and fun to sew together, you'll have the pleasure of sewing them together efficiently and quickly.

Final Thought

Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Project - Pillow & Table Mat

Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Project - Pillow & Table Mat designed by Sherri and Chelsi of A Quilting Life
Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Project - Pillow & Table Mat

Back to the Sewing Room! Like most fabric collections, you're likely to have some precuts that are sitting in your collection waiting for the right quick-finish idea. Large block-of-the-month patterns and quilt sized blocks are great to make, but there is a magic in creating a small but satisfying project in just one weekend. Today, we're going to be looking at a pattern that is so darn cheery, that you should go to your cutting table right away to create the Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Pillow and Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Table Mat.

This pattern created by the incredibly talented mother-daughter duo, Sherri and Chelsi of A Quilting Life is an absolute delight! For Moda Fabrics, they have a Strawberry Lemonade collection of fabric that has a lot of bloomy florals, fancy plaids and delightful polka-dots. It's a great color palette option for adding a splash of color in any room, and it will warm and brighten any space even when it's cold outside.

What is a quilter's best friend? Mini Charms of course!
Mini charm packs are those little irresistible of 2 ½” squares, which are frequently impulse purchases at the local quilt shop. They are undeniably adorable and give a preview of each and every print in a new fabric collection without investing a ton of money. Sometimes it can be difficult to use these little squares so they're not diminished but really come into their own in a pattern, though.

This is where Sherri and Chelsi's design really shines. All that's needed is one mini charm pack, and it's a beautiful and functional addition to home decor. Use it as a lovely lumbar pillow for your favorite chair or a gorgeous table mat for your dining room centerpiece, it's sure to be beautiful.

Project details & Fabric requirement.
Having supplies organized and cutting mat clear before you start to piece is a good thing. Here's what you need to know to begin work on this 18" x 12" finished project, based on the pattern details.
  • The Stars of the Show: 1 Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Pack. If you are crafty and would like to stash-bust, you can just cut the 39 of your favorite 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares from scraps!
  • Background: ¼ yard of a crisp white background fabric to make those bright colors pop.
  • Backing: ⅝ yard of matching fabric.
  • ¼ yard to neatly frame a beautiful piecing.
  • Materials needed: Batting 20” x 26” and muslin (same size) for the pillow top.
  • Pillow Extras: If you are using the pillow finish, it's also important to have a 24” zipper and ⅛ yard of contrasting fabric for a clean and professional looking zipper flap finish.

The art of piecing—tips and techniques for success
Since the size of the 2 ½” squares is small, it is important to keep the seam allowances scant and consistent (¼”). I would highly recommend you use a new needle and pin and pin your intersections so that all your points line up.

Be extra careful with the pressing when building the project. If you have several seam intersections on a smaller piece of patchwork, or if you want to press your seams open, you'll notice that it will help to reduce bulk. The construction itself is beautifully straightforward, and is a great weekend project for any beginner or very advanced sewist just looking for a nice afternoon at the machine.

When making a table mat, you may want to add some heavy-duty straight-line quilting for texture and durability to resist tabletop wear. A pillow with a free-motion, loopy design will be soft and inviting as well.

Final Thought
Small projects such as Strawberry Lemonade Mini Charm Pillow and Table Mat are used to refresh the palate between more massive and complicated projects of piecing. They are quick, offer a way to play with amazing lines of fabric, and are an excellent way to change our home decor seasonally easily. Take that little charm pack you've been saving, thread up your sewing machine and have a few moments of happy, stress free quilting!

Gossamer Garden Quilt

Gossamer Garden Quilt Free PDF Pattern by Color Principle for Henry Glass Fabrics
Gossamer Garden Quilt

Blossoming Inspiration is an introduction to the Gossamer Garden Quilt Project.
You might have experienced a love affair with a focal fabric panel, but couldn't seem to get a handle on how to frame it to make it a show stopping quilt, you're not alone. Sometimes quilters purchase beautiful panels purely for the aesthetic appeal, but only use them in their stash until they find a matching pattern that will give them the best look.

Enter the Gossamer Garden Quilt 2 by the Henry Glass Fabrics designer Color Principle. In this free pattern, a striking pastel floral panel is turned into a dreamy garden piece. This pattern combines fussy cutting and clever piecing to make for maximum visual impact whether you're making a weekend project or a gift that will blow someone away.

The Design & Focal Centerpiece
At the heart of the Gossamer Garden Quilt is the Gossamer Garden Panel - Pastel (2647P-10). This 24" x 44" beautiful small size panel is filled with delicate painterly florals, fluttering butterflies and whimsical dragonflies on a gentle gradient background.

To make the top of the quilt:
  • The project begins with fussy-cutting a 22 1/2” x 41 1/2” rectangle from the middle of the main panel so that the floral clusters and insect motifs are centered.
  • Inner Framing: Adding Folio - Off White (7755-04) side and top/bottom strips builds the centerpiece out to 24 1/2" x 44 1/2". The framing step defines a clear visual boundary that moves into the outer borders which are detailed.

Palette & Fabric Coordinates
The tone on tone coordinates that Henry Glass Collections has selected make them so satisfying to quilt with. The combination of soft pastels and vibrant accent colors in the Gossamer Garden project enhances the delicate tones and nuances of the panel prints.
  • Focal Panel (A): Gossamer Garden Panel - Pastel | 1 Panel (Fussy-cut center block)
  • Primary Framing (B): Folio - Off White | 1 3/8 Yards (Inner borders & unit framing)
  • Outer Border (L): Medallion - Pastel | 1 3/8 Yards (Long outer border strips)
  • Accent Blocks (C–K): Accent foliage, dragonflies, Fuchsia Flowers & Folio Solids | Assorted 1/8 to 1 yard cuts (Butter, Peach, Sky, Violet & Royal)
  • Foliage - Royal (M): 5/8 Yard (7 strip cuts)
  • Dragonflies - Violet is a backing made from 2 cuts of fabric (finished size 63" x 83").

Key Piecing Techniques
The center block serves as the backbone of the picture, while the pieces around the edges provide the quilted appearance.
  • Precision Strip Assemblies: The side and top edges are trimmed with geometric units made from narrow 1 1/2" strips of Folio solids (Butter, Peach, Orange, Pink) and Off White sashing.
  • Alternatingly paired with crisp 4 1/2" Butterflies - Cream squares, these strip units are sub-cut to form 2 x 11 (side) and 2 x 10 (top/bottom) matrices to create Matrix Border Construction.
  • Seamless Outer Framing: 6 1/2" wide strips of Medallion - Pastel quilt the pieced borders and ground the pastel palette.

The pattern is heavily dependent on correct strip sub-cutting; if a sharp rotary cut is used, and an accurate 1/4" seam allowance is maintained it will ensure that all the side matrix units will line up flush with the centre panel assembly.

Final Thought
Henry Glass Fabrics' Gossamer Garden Quilt is an excellent reminder of why panel quilts are so rewarding. When all you need to surround a focal print is strip piecing and some great pastel borders, you have the depth and complexity of an intricate quilt in a fraction of the time.

This pattern will add quiet serenity to your home whether it's a hanging on a porch bench, a bed runner, or a pattern or striped hanging across a guest bed. Grab your rotary cutter, grab the Gossamer Garden collection and fall into the soft lyricism of the next project!

The Great Outdoors Rag Quilt

Great Outdoors Rag Quilt FREE PDF PATTERN designed by Northcott Studio
The Great Outdoors Rag Quilt

Learn how to create a Cozy Up with Nature: Introduction to The Great Outdoors Rag Quilt.
I just love a rag quilt! It has the cozy weight of the finished product you want to curl up on the porch with a hot cup of coffee, the tactile beauty of frayed edges, and the convenience of quilt-as-you-go creation. The Great Outdoors Rag Quilt, designed by Northcott Studio is an absolute must sew for those who are looking for a weekend project to add rustic outdoor beauty to their home!

The pattern is ideal for anyone who has been quilting for some time and is seeking a nice ‘palette cleanser' between their more challenging paper-piecing work, or for those just starting out who want to get into quilting a full-sized throw!

Pattern Overview & Specifications
Constructed to accentuate luxurious wilderness printing, earthy colors and nature themes, this throw-sized rag quilt comes out at a generous 55” x 73”. Large enough to be used for a cabin lap blanket, as a throw for a couch or to wrap around a campfire.

Fabric & Material Requirements
When making this project to follow the official pattern specifications you will need five main focal fabrics, in addition to your batting and backings:
  • Fabric A (Block 1): 1 1/2 yards – cut into 17 squares measuring 10" x 10".
  • Fabric B (Block 2 Center): 7/8 yard – cut into 18 center rectangles 5" x 10".
  • Fabric C (Block 2 Outer): 2/3 yard – cut into 18 outer rectangles measuring 3 1/2" x 10".
  • Fabric D (Block 2 Outer): 2/3 yard – cut into 18 outer rectangles measuring 3 1/2" x 10".
  • Fabric E (Outer Border): 1 1/8 yards – cut into 24 rectangles (6" x 10") and 4 corner squares (6" x 6").
  • You will need 4 3/8 yards of flannel batting (cutting across all block sizes).
  • Backing Fabric: 4 3/8 yards – cut across all block dimensions.

Construction Techniques: How the Magic Happens
In Rag Quilting, seam allowances are turned outwards, as opposed to the “traditional” way of turning allowances inwards. Each individual block consists of 3 parts, the back, flannel batting and the top of the quilt.

Here are a few important steps to follow:
  • Quilting Each Unit: Blocks quilted one by one after being pinned. The simple diagonal "X" across the 10" squares is great and binding all layers very efficiently.
  • Exposed Seam Assembly: Blocks are seamed together with backing up to each other with a generous 1/2" seam allowance. This results in the raw edges of the fabric to be visible on the front of the quilt top.
  • Alternating Layout: The quilt has an 7 x 5 grid with both Block 1 and Block 2 laid out alternately. The direction of Block 2 is alternated row by row, resulting in a dynamic geometric flow.
  • After placing the 6" border to the outer edges and sewing a 1/2" perimeter stay stitch line, the fun part starts – snipping! Perpendicular cuts are cut at all exposed seam allowances every 1/4" to 3/8" apart (but not at the seamline).

Final Thought
The most unique aspect of The Great Outdoors Rag Quilt is that it's forgiving and rewarding. No need to fear point matching and elaborate binding skills. The exposed and snipped seam allowance will puff up into fabulous fluffy ravel. Whether you're looking for a thoughtful homemade gift or a cozy weekend project to enjoy the beauty of nature, download this pattern, select your favorite outdoor prints and get clipping!

Forget-Me-Nots Quilt

Forget-Me-Nots Quilt FREE PDF PATTERN designed by Stacey Day for FreeSpririt Fabrics, Featuring True Colors by Tula Pink
Forget-Me-Nots Quilt

Forget-Me-Nots Quilt is one of the most vibrant color quilt patterns to consider tackling if you are seeking a masterpiece project that will allow color to shine. Stacey Day for FreeSpirit Fabrics, this fabulous pattern features Tula Pink's True Colors collection in a magnificent geometric floral design.

Perfect for the paper-piecer looking to build their confidence, or those who want to dive into Tula's iconic neon/pastel hues, this project has the right mix of technical accuracy and creative delight.

Pattern Overview & Technical Breakdown
The finished size of the Forget-Me-Nots quilt is 93 ½" x 93 ½", which is a great size for a bed sized quilt or statement wall hanging. The pattern is rated at an intermediate level, but is a combination of Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) for the complex Block Units and traditional patchwork for the sashing, sashing triangles, and final assembly.

Key Specifications
  • Design Strategy: 7 diagonal rows with 25 unique blocks on point.
  • Finished Block Size: 13 ½" x 13 ½" (34.29 cm x 34.29 cm).
  • Techniques employed: Foundation Paper Piecing and straight line piecing.
  • Foundation Papers required: 200 sheets of 8 ½" x 11" foundation paper (100 copies of Foundation 1 - Corner Units and 100 copies of Foundation 2 - Side Units).
  • Suggested Tools: Add-a-Quarter ruler and new set of 80/12 machine needles to sew through paper.

Colorful Fabrics Connected To Intelligent Geometry!
The wonderful thing about Stacey Day's design is the way she is using color throughout the block construction. The 13 ½" blocks are constructed in three separate components: 4 Corner Units paper pieced, 4 Side Units paper pieced and the traditional Center 9-Patch Unit.

What a Ditz, Space Sprinkles, On the Grid, and all those other saturated prints from Tula Pink's True Colors line are then paired with crisp low-volume prints (Ghost Bunny and Ghost Droplettes).

The background prints are low volume and will give the quilt a floating lattice effect since it will be assembled on point. The outer setting triangles and borders are created with subtle tonal motifs that allow the eye to rest and the 25 floral starbursts in the center of the composition to come into their own.

Tips before you stitch—what it is and why you need it.
  • Print and cut Your 200 template sheets at 100% scale and check the 1" test square before cutting.
  • Batch & Group: Pre-cut all your fabric into blocks (1-25) and organize by them in colored project trays. When your Foundation 1 and Foundation 2 pieces are organized, the piecing process is smooth and enjoyable.
  • Fabrics such as Ghost Bunny have directional prints. Be very careful when cutting your 21" and 10 ¾" setting triangles so that all motifs are right reading across the quilt top.

Final Thoughts
Forget-Me-Nots Quilt is a marvelous expression of contemporary fabric aesthetics and ingenious block design. Stacey Day has created a palette that enables Tula Pink's True Colors to flower in an orderly fashion, transforming an abundance of bright colors into a cohesive, refined piece of art.

If you're up for a challenge that will take you a little closer to paper-piecing perfection and a little closer to happy, energetic color, download the free pattern from FreeSpirit Fabrics, organize your base sheets, and get to work. Happy stitching!

Simple Quarter Dresden Block

Simple Quarter Dresden Block FREE TUTORIAL by AQuiltingLife
Simple Quarter Dresden Block by AQuiltingLife

When it comes time to sew the November Block of the Month for 2025 A Quilting Life, things are so awesome! Designed by Sherri McConnell, is a fun change of pace with a geometric twist that will inspire you to be creative. The November block is a showstopper block, whether you're creating your last sampler layout or want a beautiful standout pattern!

The block is based on a beautiful Quarter Dresden unit as shown in the design layout. This block is an ideal introduction to the technique of Dresden plates if you've always been daunted by them.

The design is unique in many ways. This design is special for many reasons.
A classic tradition of quilting is reimagined in the November block with a few bit of twists.
  • Proportionate Blades: The block has slightly thicker blades than a regular plate. This design option lets your favorite fabric prints and focal motifs stand out.
  • Quarter-Circle Center: This is a neat alternative to a complete circular center applique to center the inner corner of the unit.
  • Size Versatility: Base unit fits perfectly inside a 6.5" x 6.5" background square. It is also a bright spot in the sew-along, for example, the main feature of a bigger log cabin plan.

Smart Construction Tips
This unit can be put together in no time and with great satisfaction. If it's for the best results, go for the freezer paper template technique. Using freezer paper coated in plastic and glued directly to your fabric will give you consistent and accurate cuts, as opposed to using a loose piece of freezer paper, which can cause fabric to shift.

With blades to be pieced, sew right-side to right-side along the wide top edges, with a regular quarter-inch seam allowance. If the blades need to be turned out, cut a small diagonal off the fat folded corner to remove unnecessary bulk. A special point-turning tool can easily remove crisp, sharp tips once turned. If you are using a thin layer of lightweight interfacing for the center of your appliqué as a curve, a thin layer of lightweight interfacing creates a wonderfully flat edge and a little body to your curve, which will lay completely flat on your background fabric. Then you can opt for the machine tacked edges or enjoy traditional hand-applique.

Final Thought
The November 2025 block is a truly unique and special piece of quilting that's both classic and contemporary. It's a very rewarding project and it is done so easily that you may end up quilting an entire quilt with these quarter units! When decorating, feel free to try adding bright colors that stand out, contrasting with the other blades to create a shimmery, fan-like effect!

Stripped Ease Quilt

Stripped Ease Quilt FREE PDF PATTERN by Barb Mayfield of APQS Northwest/The Mind's Eye
Stripped Ease Quilt

Sometimes, it's difficult to discover a new and contemporary design when you have beautiful jelly rolls or a stash of 2-1/2″ strips ready for a new use. This is a fabulous quilt pattern created by Barb Mayfield of APQS Northwest/The Mind's Eye, and it is a new take on traditional strip piecing with a creative pattern.

A design that lets the bright, colorful fabrics stand out is a great way to make them the focal point of the design. The completed quilt will be about 42” x 55”, the perfect size for a cozy lap quilt, a baby quilt or an eye catching modern wall hanging.

Material Requirements
This project has very few and simple requirements when it comes to fabric:
  • 20 strips (2-1/2” x WOF): Ideal for a partial roll of a jelly roll or to cut from favorite yardage coordinates.
  • Original design uses 1-1/2 yards of background fabric, which is solid black for an accent that really pops and creates a “floating” effect when it comes to bright prints or batiks.

The Clever Design Technique
Barb Mayfield's construction method is unique because it leads the eye. The assembly seems to be hundreds of very small individual blocks that you meticulously measured and cut; yet it is very simple and is easy for a beginner to assemble.

To begin, you will sew your 20 2-1/2" strips together along the long edges with a regular 1/4" seam allowance. Once you've added a 4" background strip to the top and the bottom of this huge strip unit, the magic begins! You use a rotary cutter or slotted strip ruler to cut across the unit to produce strips of different widths; three strips 4 inches, five strips 3 inches, and six strips 2 inches.

You'll create a chop-chop look with these newly cut columns by moving them up and down on your design wall and using crisp 1-1/2" background sashing strips to separate them. The variation of the widths of the columns does not allow the pattern to appear too structured and gives it an organic and modern movement.

Final Thought
The Stripped Ease Quilt is the perfect quilt for those who want to make a fabulous statement with little cutting and piecing! It doesn't matter which colorway you go with—whether bright and colorful or dark and mysterious—all of your quilts will be customized and individual because you'll be using your very own proportions for all of your columns.

Beacon Lights Block

Beacon Lights Block FREE PDF PATTERN by PatchworkSquare
Beacon Lights Block

The Beacon Lights quilt block is a beautiful, classic block that's sure to add some radiant energy and geometric flair to your next sewing endeavor. The block was created by the genius of Wendy Russell for PatchworkSquare and it's no wonder it has come as a contrast, direction and sharp piecing masterpiece. It becomes a ‘visual lighthouse' on the quilt top that immediately draws the attention to the center.

The Beacon Lights block at first sight appears to be quite elaborate, but is largely based on some basic patchwork pieces that every quilter, from the novice to the advanced, can do.

Why This Block Shines
The design is based on the concept of a large, solid square with a smaller, bold square (diamond) anchored at its center, symbolizing the stability of the block in the center. Radiating outwards from this core are sharp, diamond-like accents and crisp triangles, that simulate beams of light piercing through the night.

The beauty of Wendy Russell's design is that it is so versatile:

Graphic Prints or High Contrast Solids: For a striking mid-century modern look, try using high-contrast solids or graphic prints.

Traditional Cozy: Combine deep batiks, warm flannel or floral reproductions for an heirloom effect.

Multi-piece layout makes it a great choice for doing a Scrap Busting.

As with picking a color, contrast is important. In this design, the "lights" are all supported by a clean, lighter general background fabric, but the outer accent diamonds and central square must be rich and saturated to create the geometric structure of the block.

A single block can create a statement mini quilt, a row of blocks may form a colorful table runner, or blocks can be repeated to make a full-sized quilt – no matter which way you use them, you'll end up with a beautiful product.

Rain Colorstory kaleidoscope Quilt

Claim Rain Colorstory kaleidoscope Quilt by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
Rain Colorstory kaleidoscope Quilt

From the beautiful Rain Colorstory, Kaleidoscope Quilt is the perfect next sewing project for you if you love the majestic and calming feeling of the rain, the cloudy sky, and the overflowing water. This beautiful pattern designed by Elise Lea for Robert Kaufman Fabrics uses the beautiful Kaleidoscope fabric line to make an intricate, mesmerizing pattern that appears much more complex than it is actually to piece together.

This versatile 60-1/2” x 60-1/2” square quilt can be used for a dramatic wall hanging, a helpful lap quilt or the ultimate thoughtful gift.

The moody and sophisticated color story is what makes the Rain colorstory so engaging. The shades are deep and dark (Indigo and Navy) while others are lighter and softer (Powder and Rain), bringing a sense of fluidity and change in light that is characteristic of a natural storm formation. It pulls the viewer inside and forms a lovely second pattern that mesmerizes viewers throughout the quilt top.

The layout is very much like a "witches' brew," but the construction is heavily dependent on the Half-Square Triangle (HST). If you can make a neat HST, you can certainly do this pattern! You will be creating the building blocks of the quilt by matching your 5" fabric squares, quilting on the diagonal and cutting them down to a clean 4-1/2". It's then all about careful block rotation and organisational layout, and then the kaleidoscope effect takes place!

The project is a delightful challenge to contrast and value, finished off in a crisp 3-tiered border layout, which beautifully frames the central design. The Rain colorstory version of this pattern features classic quilting techniques that give high impact with a relaxing geometric design, great for the seasoned quilter looking to unwind with a geometric design, or intermediate quilters looking to practice color placement.

Amish Star Block

Amish Star Block

It's time for another blog post, quilters! Today, if you enjoy crisp lines, and a great contrast in colors, you'll be in for a treat! This is such a lovely historic favorite, Amish Star Quilt Block.

Traditionally, Amish quilts feature strong, deep-colored solid fabrics with deep black or navy quilting blocks. In this traditional format, the streamlined abstractism of this geometry is the focal point, while the busy prints are removed. The best part of piecing an Amish Star is that you get to experience that same simplicity and show.

Don't let its intricate look fool you. However, this layout is very structured and easy to learn, and is hidden beneath all that lovely flair. It cuts into easily recognizable quilt squares:

Half-Square Triangles (HSTs): Cuts to be used for making the crisp outer diamond frames.

Flying Geese Units: These are beautiful second-line directions to the points of the star.

A Solid Center Square: The ideal foundation for your color palette.

The block is designed to be a 12" square when they are arranged into a standard 9" by 9" block. The block is designed to be a beautiful 12" block when set up in a 9" block.

The thing that's fun about this layout is how it will act when you connect several blocks together. It is cleverly laid out so that a second "square-in-a-square" layout forms throughout your quilt top when you lay your blocks together. You can go with the classics of solid jewel tones or give it a contemporary twist with your favorite scrapy prints—it's an extremely rewarding pattern to put together.

Easter Lily Block

Easter Lily Block

Friends, it's back to the sewing room! I always seem to be searching for new, pretty prints to represent the springtime. If you're thinking of adding a little flowery flower to your next quilting endeavor, you are going to love the Easter Lily Quilt Block this week!

This traditional block is just a sticher's delight and was designed by the brilliant Wendy Russell at PatchworkSquare.

Wendy's design is so great because of the balance between traditional piecing and “cute” movement. This is a clever layout of half square triangles (HSTs) and squares into a beautiful stylized lily. Look at how the main dynamic extends outward, leading you to step right into the cream colored petals and the surrounding green leaves. It seems like a pretty complex design but it's all done using traditional patchwork methods, so it should be completed surprisingly quickly!

This block is ideal for the stash! For a classic spring look, go with the traditional whites and pastels, or for a more modern approach, try adding some colorful batiks for a pop in the floral geometry. It is excellent as an individual element for a table runner or be repeated throughout the top of a quilt for a great perennial garden look.

Black-Eyed Susan FREE PDF PATTERN by PatchworkSquare.
Black-Eyed Susan Block

Back to the sewing room everyone! Floral blocks are always a welcome change of season, and I'm always looking for ones to take a bit of the sunny outdoors onto our cutting tables. Those who enjoy the classic blocks with a sunny personality will adore today's featured project.

This is the classic Black-Eyed Susan quilt block, created by Wendy Russell at PatchworkSquare and it is a block wonderfully versatile to work with. This design is a beautiful rendition of the traditional wildflower using ingenious geometric piecing to achieve that lovely 'bloom'.

It is the sharp angles that add depth to this particular block configuration. The dark center square, which has a grounding effect, is contrasted with the radiating yellow petals that give it an incredibly dynamic appearance. Look at the green accent triangles at the outside corners, which perfectly enclose the bloom, as if the flower has leaves.

This block will be a happy stitching block to use in an exciting table runner or to gather up a full garden quilt for scrap-busting. Take out those beloved gold, amber and forest green fat quarters and let's get cutting!

Lucky Star Block

Lucky Star Block by Donna of Quilting Sisters Unravelled
Lucky Star Block by Donna of Quilting Sisters Unravelled

If you like stars with a modern twist, Ghazal Razavi's Lucky Star Block is a lovely 20"" star block that marries clean geometry with improv flair. This featured block by SewEndipitous and Figo Studio is perfect for layer cakes and fat quarters—and becomes a stunning on-its-own mini quilt or a show-stopping star in a full-size quilt.

Fabric Choices & Finished Size:
  • Finished Block: 20″ × 20″
  • Fabrics: A contrasting feature fabric for the star points against a crisp white background
  • Notions: Several small prints to incorporate in patchwork, and at least ¼ yd of white for borders and sashing

Construction Overview:

1. Micro‑chip HSTs:
Construct Half‑Square Twists using small half-square triangles—these emphasize the star's sharp points.

2. Corner Units & Star Points:
Seam the HST units together with rectangle strips and squares, aligning with the grid to make 16 segments.

3. Adding Sashing & Borders:
Insert 4½" × 1" white sashing strips between block segments, with 1" white squares at intersection points.

4. Final Trim & Border:
Join 18" white strips to all sides, then 20" strips to top and bottom. Press seams out for professional finish.

5. Trim to Size:
Trim block to a finished size of 20" × 20" prior to quilting.

Quilting Tips:
  • Precision Pressing: Press seams to sashing to reduce bulk and firm seams.
  • Quilt Layout: Sew rows of sashing, then sew rows together in full blocks—pressing as you sew delivers crisp results.
  • Setting Block: Use the block as a 20" mini or center to a star quilt with matching sashing and cornerstones surrounding it.

The entire pattern is available as a free PDF at SewEndipitous:

Why We Love It!
  • Bold & Balanced — The dramatic highlights of the star break up against the white field, creating a dynamic sight.
  • Perfect Size — Ideal starter block for a wall hanging, throw, or placemat.
  • Modern Meets Traditional — Subtle HST accents add interest without making the overall design challenging to assemble.

The Lucky Star Block balances modern style with traditional piecing, creating bold visual contrast and challenging construction. As a center of interest for a mini quilt or as part of a star-themed sampler, the block celebrates accuracy, contrast, and creativity.

Turning Crumbs into Quilts

Turning Crumbs into Quilts Free Tutorial
Turning Crumbs into Quilts

If you're a quilter looking to make the most of your fabric scraps, crumb quilting offers a creative and sustainable solution. Sarah Erickson's tutorial, Crumb Quilting 101: Turning Crumbs into Quilts, provides valuable insights into transforming even the smallest fabric pieces into beautiful quilt blocks.

What is Crumb Quilting?
Crumb quilting involves sewing together small, irregular fabric scraps—often referred to as "crumbs"—to create new, usable fabric pieces. This technique not only minimizes waste but also results in unique, colorful quilt blocks that add character to any project.

Getting Started with Crumb Quilting:
To begin, gather your fabric scraps, regardless of their shape or size. Start by sewing two pieces together, then continue adding more scraps, pressing seams as you go. Once your crumb fabric reaches the desired size, you can trim it to fit your quilt design.

Creative Possibilities:
Crumb quilting allows for endless creativity. You can experiment with color combinations, fabric textures, and block layouts to create a quilt that's truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you incorporate crumb blocks into a larger quilt or create an entire quilt from crumbs, the result is a testament to resourcefulness and artistic expression.
