| Spring Breeze Quilt Block |
Quilters, welcome back to the blog! There's nothing quite like bringing the freshness and vibrancy of the outdoors right to your cutting table as the seasons change. Today's quilt block is the Spring Breeze Quilt Block, and it's got a lovely design all about it. This free pattern, created by the fantastic design talents of Rose Johnston of Threadbare Creations for FaveQuilts, is a definite must-sew for this season!
This block will bring you an amazing visual movement, whether you want to refresh your knowledge of classic blocks or you're seeking a fun block project that will end up looking fantastic, it will create pinwheels dancing in a gentle April wind.
Pattern at a Glance
The Spring Breeze block is designed as a 12” finished quilt block (12 ½” unfinished). The interesting thing about this block is that it's cleverly designed with a total of five different pinwheel designs. You'll assemble four classic pinwheels to secure the outside corners, and one special, long pinwheel as the centerpiece in the middle.
This pattern is created entirely by hand piecing, and heavily uses half square triangles (HSTs). Rose has been using the widely recommended four-at-a-time HST to ensure the process is quick, efficient and extremely accurate. You will have no trouble getting the 2 ½" unfinished HST units from a pair of 4 ¼" fabric squares sewn around all four sides and cut twice diagonally. No small bias edges to be concerned about here! But with standard nesting methods – pressing seams in alternating directions, and taking great care to match the points – the units fit together like pieces of a puzzle to create three separate rows that fall into place like a jigsaw puzzle in a dream.
For a really "breezy" look, opt for a palette based on a new spring garden. A crisp white background with an aqua, soft pink or low volume floral print and accented in a bold red floral fabric will help add contrast and charm to your block.
Final Thought
This block, Spring Breeze, is a fun reminder of how we love quilting and how much we like simple, basic geometry to make our quilts appear to be spinning. It's a great stash busting project for all levels of confidence from beginner to advanced makers as the units end up at a manageable size. Sew one block for a cute seasonal mini-quilt, or chain-piece a dozen blocks for a stunning throw for your garden, this pattern is sure to bring a fresh breeze into your sewing space.
