A Freshcut Pattern Spotlight: Cozy Up with the Happy Heart Flannel Quilt
Nothing is cuter than snuggling under a homemade flannel quilt on a chilly fall day. The Happy Heart Flannel Quilt is a dream to sew if you're in the mood for a quilt that hits you with a mixture of cuteness and softness. This pattern was created by the brilliant Joyce Mullis for Free Spirit Fabrics and it's all about color, pattern play and the fun of celebrating traditional heart motifs with a modern twist.
The design is in itself impressive but the highlight is the fabric, a classic addition from the brand Freshcut Collection by Heather Bailey. Heather Bailey's Freshcut collection of whimsical quilt pieces in vintage inspired colors and patterns brings a fresh and garden inspired flair to classic flannel quilting.
Pattern Overview & Design Aesthetics
The Happy Heart Flannel Quilt is a perfect blend of romantic and structural piecing with clean lines. Created by Joyce Mullis, the design is composed of large heart blocks with framing sashing and matching borders featuring all of the special prints in the collection.
Clever contrast of value and pattern is the key to the design:
- The Freshcut lineup includes a lot of the same paints, dotted paisleys, frilly botanical swirls and playful geometric prints in peach, coral, candy green, aqua and warm cream on the Fabric Palette.
- Textural Richness: Each heart block is brushed cotton flannel so it adds a cozy, tactile layer that doesn't compromise its crispness along seams.
- The block assembly scale offers the versatility of finishing the block as a large throw, a lap blanket or a bed topper with a welcome warmth.
Key Pattern Highlights & Materials
The following are a few tips for quilting with flannel:
There are many rewards to working with flannel, but there are some differences between flannel and regular quilting cotton. The following are a few tips from the experts to hold your Happy Heart project on track:
- Wash Fabrics BEFORE They're Made: Flannel is known for shrinking more than regular cotton. The pre-wash and press will help to avoid any unwanted distortion after you have bound your quilt.
- Adjust stitch length slightly longer (about 2.5 to 2.8 mm) to minimise tension drag along seams for flannel, it has a high nap.
- Flannel seams can become thick quickly, particularly at heart points, Press Seams Open or Flat. Open seams with pressing to smooth out the edges for quilting.
- Clean, high-quality seams with Quality Thread & Needles: Use a new Universal or Microtex needle (size 80/12 or 90/14) and a strong 50wt cotton thread.
