| Breezy Batiks Quilt |
Let's Make the Breezy Batiks Quilt is a wonderful book of stunning quilts featuring a collaboration with Bear Creek and Moda Fabrics.
I have experienced the magic of working with batiks as a fellow quilter and know there is something undeniably magical about them. The rich hand-dyed colors blend wonderfully and the texture of the fabric under the sewing machine needle is truly beautiful. The Breezy Batiks Quilt is a project where these color-packed fabrics really come through. Created by Bear Creek Quilting Company and beautifully done with the Breezy Batiks collection from Moda Fabrics, this pattern is a wonderful way to capture the movement and depth we love in premium batik textiles.
You need to understand how to use patterns as well as their versatility.
The next time you're thinking about a project, the dimensions and extent of the finished product will be foremost in your mind. The Breezy Batiks Quilt comes out to a nice big 66" x 66". It is a really versatile square quilt which is perfect as a living room lap throw, as a picnic blanket or even as a beautiful draping accent over a guest bed. The design is a gorgeous combination of traditional star pieces and woven chains and will be a fun, busy project that keeps you happily at your sewing machine throughout the process from cutting to stitching!
Precut-Friendly Fabric Requirements
It's half the fun to gather your materials and this pattern is wonderfully precut friendly. You'll need only one Breezy Batiks Charm Pack with forty two five inch squares and one Breezy Batiks Jelly Roll with forty two 2 and a half inch strips to make this 66 inch square quilt. You'll need 1 1/8 yds for the background fabric through which the colorful batiks will shine. Another one and seven-eighth yards of coordinating or matching fabric are needed for your border and binding. Lastly, you'll need 4 yards of backing fabric to wrap your lovely creation.
Construction and Block Details
The visual magic in this quilt is due to the creative combination of three types of blocks. You will be building 4 A style star blocks, 8 B style star blocks and 13 chain blocks as you work through the pattern. Your lovely stars use your charm pack to make pretty focal points, and your chain blocks use your jelly roll to do highly efficient strip piecing to create an interlocking lattice effect. All the chain intersections press together nicely when joining the final rows of the assembly with a good, regular quarter-inch seam and careful pressing in the directions suggested by the pattern arrows.
Final Thought
For experienced quilters or those who have finally gotten down to quilt from their precious stash of precuts, the Breezy Batiks Quilt is a delight to put together! The combination of the complicated stars and strip-pieced chains makes for a fun and rhythmic sewing process. So, pick up your favorite Moda batiks, wind a couple bobbins and immerse yourself in the beautiful craft of creating a colorful design.
