| In From The Cold Quilt |
Warm Up Your Stash: The In From the Cold Quilt is an excellent beginning with a new quilt project.
We all have experienced the pleasure of snuggling under a warm quilt and resting on a cold winter day, particularly when it's a quilt you've created yourself. The In From the Cold quilt pattern is a must see if you're in need of the perfect cold weather sewing project to keep your machine making magic this season. This pattern, created by the genius of Kate Spain from Moda Fabrics and graciously shared by Bear Creek Quilting Company, is reminiscent of the cozy sensation of entering your home after a hard day in the snow.
Design Features and Layout
In From the Cold is, at its heart, a cozy tale of the joys of winter. Final quilt size is a comfortable 50" x 62" which is perfect for a couch throw, lap quilt or accent quilt for your favorite reading chair.
This pattern is unique in that it is whimsically designed with blocks. The quilt pattern features nine large blocks for hot beverage mugs, which are designed to be inviting and welcoming. They can be seen easily full of hot chocolate and marshmallows! An amazingly fun design that's perfect for the holidays, yet it's also easily customizable. This is a simple quilt to change the fabric themes and make it an everyday quilt for the beloved coffee or tea drinker in your life.
Techniques and Special Touches.
The quilt is quite detailed in appearance, but easy to manage when pieced. It's a pattern that is very dependent on the traditional rotary cutting and simple piecing. The mug bodies will be created from standard squares and rectangles, as will the background negative space.
The actual trick, though, is in the details. A beautiful hand embroidery detail adds to the cozy scene. With just three strands of grey embroidery floss and a basic running stitch, you will draw and then stitch out the fine "steam" that is coming up from the top of each mug. This is an excellent detail to add to a piece with a little bit of mixed media!
Fabric Versatility
The pattern was showcased with Kate Spain's popular In From the Cold fabric collection, but really pairs well with any holiday or wintery prints. The mug blocks are indeed large and are a great place to fussy cut big novelty prints. Better yet, these individual mug blocks are so flexible, if you don't have the time for a quilt, one of these blocks will be a charming placemat to make for the winter season, a festive runner for your table, or an adorable fabric gift bag!
Final Thought
Last but not least, the In From the Cold quilt is a lovely way to mark the chilly season, whether you're stitching it up as a personal present or for somebody who's feeling cold, it's a great idea to brighten them up with a quilt. Get a stack of your winter fabrics, make a cup of hot cocoa, and savor each stitch of this warm project!
