This particular design is so engaging because… and here are some structural ideas to help you get your cutting mat and fabric pull ready.

The Magic of the Design

The individual blocks may appear to be a stunning arrangement of basic blocks like half square triangles (HSTs) or flying geese units. But JoLynn Aquino's layout really shines in the final assembly.

The background patterns and accent points coordinate with the blocks as they are added one by one, creating a lovely "hidden" star pattern along the intersections. This Optical secondary pattern moves the emphasis from the isolated block design towards a coherent, fluid secondary lattice work.

The first step in selecting fabrics is finding high contrast. The starting point for selecting fabrics is high contrast.

Fabric selection and contrast are of utmost importance to ensure the hidden star doesn't remain hidden:

1- In the Foreground (Star Points): Choose a bright color or a different print that contrasts with your background. If these points are very similar to the background, then the secondary star's secondary effect will spill over into the surrounding elements.
2- Secondary Elements: Add a secondary tone or medium value print to tie in anchor the centers or outer corners of the primary blocks.
3- The Background: This should be a solid or very light volume print. It provides resting point for the eye and establishes crisp, clean lines needed to draw the secondary star pattern through the top of the quilt.

The level of the skill and its techniques. The level and techniques of the skill.
The final quilt is complex, but the technique it uses is simple piecing blocks. This pattern is easy to follow for confident beginners and a fun and relaxed sew for experienced quilters.

There are a number of key technical focus areas that include:

- Accurate 1/4" Seams: The secondary star is dependent on the lines being matched precisely at the block edges, so it is important to have an accurate 1/4" seam allowance for perfect point alignment.

- Press for Nesting: Make a plan for pressing block by block. If you are sewing across opposite seams you will get your corners to nest better if you press your seams alternately towards each other to reduce bulk.
