Stunning 3D Geometry: Sewing the Terrarium Quilt in the Gathered Collection
Hello quilters, it's time for the cutting table! Today I have a gorgeous surprise for those who are looking for a project that will be both gorgeous and organic! We're working on the gorgeous Terrarium Quilt that was designed by Bonnie Christine and Maxie Makes for Art Gallery Fabrics.
This free pattern was launched with the Succulence line but now we are taking this 3D masterpiece and recreating it with Bonnie Christine's gorgeous Gathered Collection. Earthy tones, fine botanical prints and soft styling all seem to flow and fall to perfection with the faceted shapes of this design, adding a fresh, nature infused warmth to your sewing room.
Pattern Overview & Key Details
Let's first consider the structure of this project:
- Finished Size: Quilt is finished at a great size of 52.5” x 60”, perfect for a throw or extra large lap quilt.
- The Shapes: This design is a great optical illusion in 3D form, with traditional tumbling blocks. Here you will be cutting 60 degree diamonds (a 24.5” x 6.5” Creative Grids ruler is highly recommended for cutting this shape). By carefully combining three diamonds in a row (dark on top, medium on left, and light on right), you will have one remarkable-hexagon that visually "pops".
- The Technique: This pattern does call for Y-seams! The pattern is the secret to avoiding mistakes, and Y-seams need not be daunting to some pieceers. The secret of success is just to begin and end the stitches 1/4” away from the edge! This will leave the seam allowances free to be spiraled around on the back to make your blocks lay flat.
- Squaring it Up: You won't get too much to do with a square quilt top. This pattern includes printable templates for half-hexies and half-diamonds to fill in the sides, top and bottom so that you will have perfectly straight lines before you add the final borders.
Final Thought
Y-seaming and 60 degree angles are great for extending your piecing skills and give some great challenges. By the time the illusion of the mesmerizing, tumbling Terrarium Quilt was finished, every single careful pin and seam was well worth the labor. So, grab your rotary cutter, your favorite sewing music and let's do some geometry!
