What I Love About This Pattern
1. Central Lone Star
This stunning quilt has a huge 34" x 34" Lone star made up of eight different diagonally cut 9-patch blocks. Using cut on the line diamonds and inset Half Square Triangles (HSTs) gives a real focal point to this quilt.
2. Multiple Borders
The main thing that stands out about this pattern is the multiple layers of borders. Instead of simple borders there are 7 layers of borders to build up the quilt:
Inner Border #2 (Cross Blocks): Made up of 28 6" x 6" Cross blocks.
Inner Border #4 (Pieced Blocks): Alternating 10" x 10" Block A and Block B. Block A & B are made using Half Square Triangles and cornered rectangles.
Inner Border #6 (Star Blocks): This border encases the whole quilt with 64 5" x 5" mini star blocks. These are made using accurate Flying Geese blocks.
3. Colorful
There are 18 different highlight fabrics (Fabrics D to S) used in this pattern. These have been placed on bright black, white and sunrise solids (Fabrics A, B & C). Creating a stunning depth to each section of the quilt top.
Final Thought
The Designer Star Quilt by Wendy Sheppard is an incredible project. The quilt uses accurate piecing and has multiple layers of borders. The finished quilt is 99" x 99" so makes a beautiful heirloom quality bed cover. There are a lot of sections so make sure you label your pieces well. Have fun creating this colorful star quilt!
