Fall in Love Heart Afloat Quilt: A Scrappy Masterpiece
Back to the Sewing Room! Like me, your fabric stash is ever expanding and you are always searching for the right pattern to use those terrific fabrics. I want to let you know about a project that will tug at your heart today. The Hearts Afloat Quilt is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day, a romantic anniversary gift or just a cozy addition to your living room.
This pattern was created by the super talented Bev Getschel for the Quiltmaker magazine and is a quilting favorites. So beautifully displayed by the wonderful Jessica Dayon who left us all with a reminder of how versatile and fun this layout can be, in a scrappy, vibrant way!
What makes “Hearts Afloat” so special?
As you look at this quilt, you're struck by the beautiful border. The Hearts Afloat pattern is different from a standard straight binding as it produces a scalloped edge with the outer ring of applique and pieced hearts. It makes for a beautiful center and allows the piece to lend a soft, romantic curve that really does fit when draping over a couch or the foot of a bed.
Before you get started with this pattern, here's what you need to know:
- Finished Size: The quilt will be a generous 56″ x 64″. It makes a great lap quilt or cozy throw for your reading chair.
- Don't be frightened off by the scalloped edges! The center blocks are simple to piece and a fun project for the more advanced sewer and a relaxing weekend for the more experienced quilters!
- The design: The center is done in simple geometric half square triangle piecing and expands out from there, beautifully paired with the adorable heart designs along the borders.
A Scrappy Quilter’s Dream
I really love how Jessica Dayon interprets this pattern—and how it can be done in a “shop your stash” style. With fat quarters, scraps, and half-yard cuts waiting in the wings for a project, it's time for them to come out of the woodwork.
For a cute and funky appearance, between 7 and above the main colours should be pulled different. It's very easy to do a traditional red, but you don't have to go with a traditional script. Did you imagine this quilt in soft lavenders, or maybe bright pinks or a two-tone blue and white for a classic and crisp look?
For the background, using low volume prints, instead of a solid white will bring an element of texture and interest to the main print without detracting from the print. It adds a vintage, lived-in aspect to the quilt, which is perfect with the scalloped heart border.
