Materials and Fabric Requirements:
To create the Mosaic Quilt, you'll need the following materials:
  • 36 Layer Cake 10” Squares: These pre-cut squares form the foundation of the quilt blocks.
  • Accent Fabric – 7/8 yard: Used to create the distinctive sashing strips that add contrast and definition to each block.
  • Optional Sashing – 5/8 yard: For those who prefer additional separation between blocks, optional sashing can be added.
  • Binding – 1/2 yard: To finish the edges of the quilt.
  • Backing – 3 yards: For the back of the quilt.
The finished quilt size is approximately 45" x 63", or 47" x 66" with optional sashing.

Assembly Instructions:
1. Cutting the Accent Strips:
  • From the accent fabric, cut two strips measuring 15” in width.
  • Sub-cut each into 36 strips measuring 1” x 15”, totaling 72 accent strips.
2. Preparing the Blocks:
  • Select two different 10” Layer Cake squares and stack them with right sides up and raw edges aligned.
  • Make a slight angled cut across the stack.
  • Swap the resulting pieces to create two blocks with contrasting fabrics.
3. Adding the Accent Strips:
  • Using a chalk pencil, mark a small point near the center of each cut edge on the block.
  • Take an accent strip and draw a chalk line across its back.
  • Align the chalk marks and sew the accent strip to one side of the cut block using a ¼” seam allowance.
  • Press the seam allowance away from the accent strip.
  • Attach the remaining section of the block to the other side of the accent strip, aligning the chalk marks, and press the seam allowance away from the accent.
4. Trimming the Blocks:
  • After assembling, trim each block down to 9½” square to ensure uniformity.
5. Assembling the Quilt Top:
  • Arrange the blocks into a 5 x 7 layout.
  • Sew the blocks together in rows, and then join the rows, pressing seam allowances in alternating directions.
6. Optional Sashing:
  • For added separation between blocks, cut 1 strip at 9½” width of fabric (WOF) and sub-cut into 28 pieces measuring 1” x 9½”.
  • Sew these between the blocks in each row.
  • Then, cut 8 strips at 1” WOF, sew into one long piece, and sub-cut into 6 pieces measuring 1” x 47½”.
  • Sew these between the rows.
7. Finishing:
  • Once the quilt top is assembled, layer it with batting and backing, quilt as desired, and bind the edges to complete your Mosaic Quilt.
