Some of the most popular half-square triangle techniques for beginners are the half-square triangles, pinwheel accents, and precision piecing methods.
Kismet Magic: Color and Soul
To make the Poppy Quilt stand out, it's the sophisticated color story. The Kismet collection has plenty of earthy fall hues, including luxurious terracotta and golden ambers, soothing sandstones, and striking counterpoint deep charcoals. The contrast of solid colors and pattern designs creates a stunning second effect: the illusion that the blocks float and merge together in perfect harmony, as in Pure Solids, Sandstone and Miami Sunset. A nice reminder of how simple geometric shapes can be created into pure art with the right choice of fabrics.
Navigating the Construction
The term Advanced should not give you a headache; this is a pattern that takes time, patience and very accurate cutting. The design is heavily inspired by small pinwheel movements, sharp half square triangles and clean diagonal seams to make the larger blocks for a medallion block design.
The secret of success is to have a 1/4" seam allowance all over the project. Due to the large amount of overlapping intersections of warm florals and darker accents, pinning intersections is strongly advised. By taking time to square up the sub-units as you work, you will end up with the top of the final square that will be a very rewarding puzzle to put together.
Final Thought
More than just a weekend project, the Poppy Quilt is a stunning blank canvas on which to play with rich and moody colors and piecing methods. This design can be used in the traditional Bohemian range of warmth from the Kismet collection or you can create your own variation of the contrast – it will be a wonderful heirloom. With your rotary cutter and your fabrics flattened, have fun with every stitch of this creative process!
