Jewel in the Night Quilt

Jewel in the Night Quilt Free Pattern
Jewel in the Night Quilt

One of my favorite joys as a quilter is discovering patterns that are as beautiful as they are beginner-friendly, and the Jewel in the Night Quilt from Riley Blake Designs checks both of those boxes. Designed to feature the romantic and vintage-inspired Parisian fabric collection by Chelsea Andersen, this quilt is a true gem for anyone who loves soft florals, timeless color palettes, and clean, striking layouts.

The moment I laid eyes on the pattern, I was drawn in by its clean geometry and glowing symmetry. The layout is modern yet classic, and with the right fabric choices, it transforms into something truly spectacular—like a jewel glimmering in moonlight, just as the name suggests.

What Makes This Quilt Sparkle:
The Jewel in the Night Quilt is designed with simplicity and symmetry in mind. It’s a confident beginner-friendly project, measuring approximately 55” x 71”, making it a great size for a throw, lap quilt, or display piece. The star of the show here is truly the fabric—the quilt provides the perfect backdrop for those luscious Parisian prints to shine.

The quilt is made up of large fabric squares bordered by sashing, with bold cornerstones that add dimension and pop. The result is a layout that feels organized and structured but still full of movement.

Materials You'll Need:
Here's a general idea of what you'll need to recreate this quilt:
  • 1 Fat Quarter Bundle of Parisian by Chelsea Andersen
  • Coordinating yardage for sashing, cornerstones, and binding
  • Backing fabric (approx. 3½ yards)
  • Batting to match finished size
  • Basic sewing and quilting supplies
If you're not using the original Parisian collection, you can substitute with any fabric line that has a blend of bold prints and soft backgrounds—think shabby chic florals, modern prints, or even batiks for a bolder take.

A Few Piecing Tips:
I found this quilt pattern relaxing and rewarding to sew. Here are a few quick tips that helped me along the way:

1. Careful Fabric Selection – With large block areas, choose a mix of busy prints and calmer ones to maintain visual balance.

2. Consistent Sashing – Take your time aligning the sashing strips and cornerstones to keep everything square.

3. Pressing Matters – Press your seams consistently (I prefer open for this project) to reduce bulk and ensure flat joins.

The pattern includes a helpful diagram, and the piecing instructions are straightforward and easy to follow, even if you’re relatively new to quilting.

Creative Variations:
While the original pattern uses a chic pastel palette, this layout offers so many possibilities. Here are a few ideas to make it your own:
  • Holiday Version – Use Christmas or fall fabrics for a seasonal throw.
  • High-Contrast Style – Try black-and-white prints with a bold pop color for the sashing.
  • Scrappy Look – Use scraps or stash fat quarters with a common color theme for a more eclectic design.
No matter how you interpret it, this quilt turns out beautiful.

The Jewel in the Night Quilt is a gentle reminder that sometimes the most elegant quilts are the simplest in construction. It offers a stunning way to highlight a beloved fabric collection and comes together relatively quickly, making it ideal for gifting or relaxing weekend sewing.

Whether you’re a beginner eager for a satisfying finish or a seasoned quilter looking for a pattern that lets your fabrics take center stage, this quilt is sure to delight.

Happy stitching, and may your quilting always shine like a jewel in the night!

Garden Fence Quilt

Garden Fence Quilt Free Tutorial
Garden Fence Quilt

The Garden Fence Quilt by the Hyacinth Quilt Designs is a fantastic pattern to consider in case you are interested in quilting blocks that are easy to construct and that are also made to look quite attractive. The inspiration behind this jovial block of quilt was the appearance of a garden fence - crisp white lines with blocks of color peeking through in between; thus this is ideal to both experienced quilt makers and beginners.

A Fresh Take on a Classic:
The Garden Fence block is contrasted and proportioned and the white strips are very narrow and intersected by the brighter center and outer pieces to produce a clean and modern appearance. It has been called an offshoot of the rail-fence style, but with a fence-post texture to it because of the manner in which the white strips delimit the colored ones.

This block was originally published by Hyacinth Quilt Designs and it is constructed using a combination of rectangles and strips that are held together in a balanced manner and is easy to sew and assemble. Get Free Tutorial Here.

Block Construction Basics:
Final sizes of each Garden Fence block are 10 personalities (1012 unfinished) and cutting parts consist of:

Center square -- 41/2'' x 41/2''

Outer rectangles - 4 pieces that measure 21/2'' x 3'' and 4 pieces that measure 21/2'' x 5''.

White background strips - normally cut in different lengths making 11/2 strips to cover each side of the block.

Piecing Steps:
1. Start with the Center Square:
The block has a heart, which consists of your focal fabric square.

2. Add White Strips:
Start framing by sewing 41/2'' and 61/2'' rectangles facing each other in the center square.

3. Build the Sides:
Secure two white strips and two colored outer rectangles by gluing them in pairs and then continue to stretch the edges of the blocks. Lastly, attach these put up strips to the unit in the center to have your block.

The technique is simple to use and therefore this construction is an excellent approach to strip piecing or you can sew a lot of blocks simultaneously.

Design Ideas and Fabric Play:
  • Color Combinations: Soft spring quilt With pastel color combination, or bright against the white background, for a contemporary look.
  • Scrappy Quilt Layout: Be as creative as you want with the middle and outer rectangles, with a mixture of prints, and then use uniform white strips to create a coherent and yet energetic quilt top.
  • size differences: Starting with the original block, which is 10 '' finished, you can shrink or enlarge it on a bigger or a smaller grid- ideally with quilt, table runner or wall hanging.

Why Quilters Love It:
  • Easy to Piece: This is a block with rectangle and strips that can be sewn together easily and can thus be used by an aspiring sewer.
  • Versatile Layout: One can vary the blocks: place them in rows or on point to adjust the general impact.
  • Stash-Friendly: This could be a great pattern to use scraps or fat quarters with, particularly with a plain background.

The Garden Fence Quilt block is a demonstration of how simple shapes and ingenious design may make a quilt pattern that appears fresh and modern. Either you can create a full quilt of repeated blocks or have them mixed with some other blocks, this can be a creative and easy pattern.

Harlequin Charm Quilt

Harlequin Charm Quilt Free pattern by Jinny Beyer
Harlequin Charm Quilt

If you enjoy working with pre-cuts and bold geometric designs, the Harlequin Charm Quilt by Jinny Beyer is a beautiful and practical addition to your quilting projects. This quilt is designed specifically for 5-inch charm squares. It combines simplicity with striking visual impact, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced quilters.

What Makes the Harlequin Charm Quilt Unique:
The Harlequin design draws inspiration from the classic diamond pattern often seen in traditional textiles. In this quilt, charm squares are arranged and pieced to create diagonal movement across the quilt top, giving it a dynamic, woven appearance.

This pattern is appealing because it transforms simple square pieces into a more complex layout without complicated techniques.

Materials & Fabric Choices:
One of the best features of this quilt is its accessibility. The pattern is intended for:

- 5'' Charm Squares (pre-cut or cut from your stash)
- Background or accent fabric (optional, depending on your variation)
- Batting and backing fabric
- Standard quilting tools (rotary cutter, ruler, sewing machine, thread)

Since charm squares often come in coordinated fabric collections, you can easily achieve a cohesive color palette. Alternatively, you can make a scrappy version using leftover fabrics for a more playful look.

How the Quilt Comes Together:
1. Start with Charm Squares:
The quilt begins with 5'' squares, which form the foundation of the design. These squares are typically cut or arranged to create diagonal units that mimic diamond shapes.

2. Create the Harlequin Effect:
By rotating and joining the squares strategically, the quilt develops its signature diagonal pattern. Careful placement is key. Laying out your pieces before sewing helps ensure a balanced design.

3. Piece Rows or Units:
Sew your pieces into rows or blocks, following the method outlined in the pattern. Maintain a consistent 1/4'' seam allowance for accuracy.

4. Assemble the Quilt Top:
Join rows together, matching seams carefully to keep the diagonal lines flowing smoothly across the quilt.

5. Quilt and Finish:
Layer your quilt top with batting and backing, quilt as desired, and finish with binding. Straight-line quilting works beautifully with this geometric design and enhances the harlequin effect.

Design Tips for Stunning Results:
- Play with Color Value: Mix lights, mediums, and darks to highlight the diamond pattern.
- Try a Coordinated Collection: Fabric lines designed to coordinate make this quilt especially harmonious.
- Go Scrappy: For a more eclectic look, use a variety of prints from your stash.
- Layout First: Arrange your blocks on a design wall or floor before sewing to perfect your composition.

Why Quilters Love This Pattern:
- Beginner-Friendly: Straight seams and simple shapes make it approachable.
- Precut-Friendly: Works well with charm packs, saving cutting time.
- Versatile Design: Suited for modern, traditional, or scrappy styles.
- Visually Striking: The diagonal layout adds movement and interest.

Valentine Candy Quilt

Valentine Candy Quilt Free Tutorial
Valentine Candy Quilt

This beautiful "Valentine Candy" quilt shows off the art of scrap quilting. A talented member of the Quilting Board community (@JENNR8R) created it for her daughter. The design gives new life to leftover fabric pieces, turning them into a lively celebration of love. This project shows how a "scrappy" style can create a stylish and unified work of art. It serves as great inspiration for quilters wanting to use up their fabric stash.

The quilt has a series of large patchwork hearts, each carefully made from different colorful fabric squares. These squares create a look similar to a box of assorted candies. The hearts stand out against a crisp, cream-colored background, enhanced by detailed long-arm quilting with elegant feathers and swirling designs. A lovely detail is the "Dresden Plate" floral border at the bottom, adding a fun element. The mix of colorful scraps inside the organized heart shapes creates a stunning visual balance. This quilt is truly a labor of love.

Morning Star Quilt

Lori's Morning Star Quilt free Tutorial
Lori's Morning Star Quilt

There’s something magical about a quilt block that feels both classic and celestial—and the Morning Star block is exactly that. Designed by Marcia Hohn of The Quilter’s Cache, this block blends tradition with a radiant visual impact, making it a beautiful choice for quilters who enjoy working with stars and structured layouts.

I recently explored this block in my sewing room, and let me tell you—it’s a joy to piece and even more satisfying to admire once it comes together.

Why the Morning Star Block is a Standout?:
The Morning Star is a variation of the classic eight-point star. It has a striking design thanks to the use of diamonds and triangles arranged to create bold, shining points that seem to radiate from the center.

It’s more intricate than a beginner block but still quite approachable for those ready to take their piecing skills to the next level. The finished block measures 12 inches square, making it versatile enough for quilts, wall hangings, or table toppers.

Marcia’s pattern includes:
  • Detailed piecing instructions
  • Diagrams to guide each step
  • Color suggestions and layout tips
One of my favorite aspects of this block is how dramatically it changes depending on fabric choices. Whether you go scrappy or choose a tight palette of solids or batiks, the star will shine.

What You’ll Need:
To make the Morning Star block, gather:
  • Three coordinating fabrics – light, medium, and dark for contrast
  • Basic sewing and quilting supplies
  • A rotary cutter and ruler for precision
The block is constructed with a combination of half-square triangles and diamond shapes, so accuracy in cutting and seam allowances is key. A bit of patience pays off beautifully!

Piecing Tips from My Sewing Table:
Here are a few practical tips that helped me while making the Morning Star block:

1. Pre-trim your units – Cutting accurate diamonds and triangles will help everything fit together smoothly. A specialty ruler can come in handy but isn’t essential.

2. Press with care – Pressing seams to the side or open, depending on bulk, helps the points stay crisp and flat.

3. Chain piece where possible – With repetition in the units, this speeds up the process and keeps things organized.

Marcia’s directions are clear and beginner-friendly, but if you’re new to piecing angles or diamonds, I suggest making a test block with scrap fabric to get the feel for it.

Creative Ways to Use the Morning Star Block:
The Morning Star block is incredibly versatile. Some ideas include:
  • Samplers – Add this to a sampler quilt for a strong visual anchor.
  • Repeating layout – Use it across an entire quilt top for a stunning celestial pattern.
  • Seasonal décor – Try red, green, and gold for a festive star or cool tones for a wintry effect.
  • Quilted pillows – One block alone makes a striking pillow top.
No matter how you use it, the Morning Star block brings brightness and balance to any quilt project.

Marcia Hohn’s Morning Star Quilt Block is a shining example of how traditional design elements can still feel fresh and inspiring. The geometric layout is both bold and elegant, offering the perfect platform to experiment with color and contrast.

Woven Star Block Quilt

Woven Star Block Quilt Free Pattern designed by Joan of Cali Quilter
Woven Star Block Quilt

Make bold geometry and smart constructions in the Woven Star Block Quilt. This pattern was designed by Joan of CaliQuilter and is a bold look as it has sharp points and a complex design of secondary stars that are formed after the blocks are assembled. What is more brilliant though is the technique: it is a reusable freezer paper underpinning technique. It is a foolproof method of piecing with high accuracy and does not result in the type of waste and frustration that may occur with paper backing, and this makes it an ideal project to the efficiency-conscious quilter.

What Is the Woven Star Block?

The Woven Star block is a 10'' finished quilt block that is made using foundation paper piecing (FPP)- however, Joan uses freezer paper as the foundation rather than paper. Freezer paper is shiny and just grips enough to be used during stitching and the templates can be used several times.

Every block consists of two types of units named Unit A and Unit B and four blocks are included in each of the two types. Since each unit has only three seams, it is a comparatively fast method of construction of an FPP block.

How the Block Comes Together:
1. Foundation Preparation:
When you use freezer paper you do not sew through the foundation, but through the folds that answer to each seam. Apply patches of press fabric on the glossy part of freezer paper as you proceed and crease along the reference lines of the seams in order to have the seams accurate.

2. Units A and B:
  • Cut fabric pieces that are a bit bigger than the areas in the pattern indicated on the pattern so each one is able to cover over the area that it is supposed to cover.
  • Align the patches one on top of the other (right-sides-together) with the patch that came before and sew along an adjacent edge of the template.
  • Pin and bast as required between rows of stitching.
  • Such a procedure is to be repeated with four A units and four B units.

3. Block Assembly:

Sew one A and B unit together when your A and B units are complete. Sewing on the press seams are done to allow the star pattern to lie flat. Then form pairs on the top and bottom rows and then the rows are sewn together to make the block complete.

This nesting and pressing one over another of the seams, produces a hollow-like center, flattish, and spiral in effect, which disperses bulk perfectly and gives to the back of the block nearly the look of polish that the front.

Design Appeal:
  • Secondary Star Effect: When you stack up several blocks of woven stars in a quilt the placement of rich colors will have a secondary star effect over the top of the quilt- a gorgeous unexpected sight.
  • Scrap-Friendly: The woven star blocks are an excellent method to employ the small scraps or contrasting prints to play with colors in a dynamic manner.
  • Templates that can be used over and over again: Paper used with freezer paper templates conserves paper and also ensures that repeated blocks are more uniform.

Tips for Success:
  • Proper Cutting: Cut the pieces of fabric slightly bigger than you need to be sure that you do not run out of fabric to cover the seams.
  • Careful Pressing: To make the freezer paper straight and in line with your sewing lines, fold the paper along seam lines, then stitch.
  • Color Placement: Use dark and light contrasts to dramatic stars, a tonal palette would create a lighter woven look.

Ready to Give It a Try?
You can see the entire Woven Star Block Quilt Pattern here.

The Woven Star Block Quilt is an exquisite piece of the combination of traditional star quilt design and accurate imaging with piecing. This block is versatile and aesthetic regardless of whether you are creating a sampler quilt, wall hanging or a large bed quilt. Freezer paper is also a better material to use with foundation piecing and also makes it easier and more fun, particularly when using repeat blocks.

West Virginia Star Block

West Virginia Star Block Free Quilt Pattern
West Virginia Star Block

There’s something special about working with classic quilt blocks. They connect us to quilting’s deep roots while still offering plenty of room for creativity and personal expression. One of my recent favorites is the West Virginia Star Block, a traditional design thoughtfully shared by Wendy Russell of Patchwork Square.

This block features strong lines, striking geometry, and a beautiful balance between symmetry and movement. Whether you’re sewing for a heritage quilt or exploring Americana motifs, the West Virginia Star is a timeless choice.

What Makes the West Virginia Star Block Unique?
The West Virginia Star is a nine-patch block variation that utilizes half-square triangles (HSTs), square-in-a-square units, and simple piecing to create a layered star effect. It’s a block with depth and visual interest but doesn’t require overly complicated piecing—perfect for confident beginners and experienced quilters alike.

The design consists of:
  • A center square-in-a-square unit, which adds dimension and a focal point.
  • Eight star points, created with half-square triangles that frame the center beautifully.
  • Corner units that enhance the star shape and bring balance to the block.
The finished block size is 12 inches, making it easy to integrate into larger quilts or sampler projects.

Materials and Cutting Guide:
Wendy's pattern offers a clear cutting guide and layout instructions. You’ll need three fabrics:
  • Light fabric (great for background or contrast)
  • Medium fabric for supporting the star’s structure
  • Dark fabric to make the star points pop
The block construction is methodical and well-supported by Wendy’s helpful diagrams. Even if you’re newer to quilt blocks with multiple unit types, this is a great opportunity to practice accurate piecing.

Piecing Tips for Success:
From my experience sewing this block, here are a few tips to make your stitching smoother:

1. Use a scant ¼" seam allowance throughout—this will help your units line up just right.

2. Press carefully—press seams open or to the darker fabric, depending on your preferred technique, to avoid bulk where points meet.

3. Trim units as you go—accurate half-square triangles and square-in-a-square units make final assembly much easier.

Ideas for Using This Block:
The West Virginia Star works beautifully in:
  • Sampler quilts – Pair it with other traditional blocks for a heritage look.
  • Wall hangings – Feature it in a medallion-style layout or framed as a focal piece.
  • Table runners or pillows – Make one or two blocks with patriotic or seasonal fabrics.
  • Scrap quilts – Use stash fabric in similar color values for a scrappy, vibrant effect.
It’s also a wonderful block for showcasing contrast. Try a classic red, white, and blue palette for a patriotic theme, or go modern with jewel tones and low-volume backgrounds.

Wendy Russell’s West Virginia Star Block is a satisfying and adaptable design that blends tradition with opportunity for personal flair. It’s the kind of block that builds your piecing confidence while rewarding you with a beautiful result. Best of all, Wendy provides it for free—making it easy to add this stunning design to your quilting journey.

Radiant Quilt (via Craftsy member Ginny Flock)

In case you are attracted to quilts with strong geometry and play of fabric, the Radiant Quilt by Cozy Quilt Designs is the perfect option. This pattern of quilt has been able to win the hearts of quilters due to its light-soaked look as the name suggests and is particularly beautiful when made of high quality fabrics such as those of RJR fabrics.

The pattern based on Fat Quarters Anonymous is easy to work with (as demonstrated in the You Tube tutorial), and it is fulfilling to those who have already mastered the craft of quilting.

What Is So Special about the Radiant Quilt:
The Radiant Quilt is designed with the help of simple geometrical forms to produce a dynamic image. When the quilt is put together, it looks like it is glowing in the middle and the pieces are almost bursting out like a star in all directions. This light energy has made it a popular choice in quilts that are destined either to be placed on beds, walls or snuggly up-to-now throws!

RJVR Fabrics are more effective at this: their luxurious, well-matched fabrics provide stunning color contrast and touch that makes the glamorous design shine.

Materials & Preparation

These are the main things you need before commencing piecing:
  • Paternity quilt pattern, Cozy Quilt Designs, this pattern is also a good pattern to use with fat quarters and the pattern can be used in sizes that are baby up to king.
  • Fabric collection - RJR Fabrics works with fabric line to coordinate a set of fabrics of your choice to coordinate your quilt palette and enhance the radiant look.
  • Quilting accessories - rotary cutter, mat, acrylic rulers, sewing machine, quality thread, pins, and batting of your choice.
Proper cutting and pressing is significant in a design such as this in which shapes and angles are corresponding so as to form the radiating pattern.

Step-by-Step Construction

1. Cut Your Pieces
Tracing the cutting diagram of the pattern. This quilt involves a combination of strips, squares, and triangles - strips, squares, and triangles which are assembled together to get the radiating blocks that make the quilt have its own character.

2. Assemble Quilt Blocks
This is done to give you a visual representation of how the colors and forms will combine; lay out your pieces in advance and then sew them. Use of a seam allowance of uniform 1/4 inch to give the correct block sizes. Stitch as you go up tight blocks.

3. Join Blocks into Quilt Top.
After sewing the individual blocks, lay the blocks in the pattern you see in the pattern or tutorial. This design plays off of order; a fabric rearranged by a few simple methods can result in entirely different appearances to it, so have a go at auditioning your blocks.

4. Quilt and Bind
Once the top has been assembled, cover it with batting and backing cloth. Cut as you please, even in straight lines (especially effective with the radiant motif) and then cut, and put on your binding.

Watch & Learn
There is also a nice You Tube tutorial that shows how the Radiant Quilt is constructed in action. This is one of the best companions of the printed pattern, particularly when you like to see the techniques and piecing patterns at work before you start sewing.
