The Cathedral Windows Quilt

Cathedral Windows Quilt made by Emily Sandoval of Quiltish -Quilts & stuff-, The Tutorial designed By Abby Holverson
The Cathedral Windows Quilt by Emily Sandoval of Quiltish -Quilts & stuff-

Quilting has long been a beautiful expression of both creativity and craftsmanship, and few quilt styles capture that blend more dramatically than the Cathedral Windows Quilt. Designed by Abby Holverson and shared on Instructables, this stunning quilt is inspired by the intricate stained glass windows seen in centuries-old cathedrals—and it's just as breathtaking in fabric as it is in stone and glass.

As a quilter, I’ve always admired the dimensional beauty and folded fabric technique used in cathedral windows. It’s one of those projects that combines sewing precision with visual impact, resulting in a quilt that feels both luxurious and nostalgic.

What Makes Cathedral Windows So Special?
Unlike traditional pieced quilts that are layered with batting and backing, the Cathedral Windows Quilt is created with a unique origami-style folding method. Each block is constructed by folding squares of fabric in a specific way that builds the quilt top, backing, and structure all at once—no additional batting required.

The arched “windows” are then completed by sewing curved edges over colorful inserts, which appear like radiant panes of stained glass. The final result is a dimensional, tactile work of art.

Materials You’ll Need:
Abby’s tutorial keeps it simple and approachable. You’ll need:
  • A solid background fabric (traditionally white or cream)
  • A variety of colorful prints for the “windows”
  • Thread and basic sewing supplies
  • An iron for all the precise pressing that this pattern requires
  • A sewing machine (though some choose to finish parts by hand for that heirloom feel)
One great aspect of this quilt is that you can start small. Make a single block, a wall hanging, or even a pillow to explore the technique before committing to a full quilt.

Construction Tips:
Here are a few helpful tips I’ve found when working with Cathedral Windows:
  • Precision pressing is key. You’ll be folding and ironing multiple layers, so accurate creases make everything align perfectly.
  • Use a fabric with a bit of body. Quilting cotton works great, but make sure it’s not too stiff or too thin.
  • Work in sections. Building this quilt block by block makes it manageable and more enjoyable.
  • Add color play. Choose window fabrics that contrast beautifully with your background for the most eye-catching effect.
Abby’s step-by-step tutorial on Instructables is thorough and easy to follow, with detailed photos guiding you from the first fold to the final stitch.

Why Try Cathedral Windows?
If you’re a quilter looking to step away from traditional patchwork and try something more sculptural, this technique offers a completely different kind of sewing experience. It’s perfect for:
  • Quilters who enjoy hand-finishing or visible topstitching
  • Anyone looking to make a show-stopping quilt without batting or binding
  • Those who love mixing solids with bold, playful prints

The Cathedral Windows Quilt designed by Abby Holverson is not just a quilting project—it’s a conversation piece. With its rich history and elegant design, this quilt style offers something deeply satisfying for those who love detailed, meditative sewing. Whether you make a pillow or a full-size quilt, you’ll be preserving a classic quilting tradition while making something uniquely your own.

Star Gazer Quilt

Star Gazer Quilt Free Pattern
Star Gazer Quilt

Every once in a while, a quilt pattern comes along that stops you in your tracks—and the Star Gazer Quilt by Wendy Sheppard does just that. Designed with RJR Fabrics’ Wildwood Way and Malam Batiks collections, this project beautifully blends tradition with a fresh, nature-inspired palette. With its thoughtful construction and stunning interplay of star blocks and batik fabrics, it’s a must-make for quilters who love vibrant color and precise piecing.

As a quilter, I find Wendy Sheppard’s designs both elegant and approachable. Her Star Gazer Quilt offers a harmonious balance between complexity and clarity—making it suitable for intermediate quilters ready for a rewarding challenge. Whether you’re creating this quilt to cozy up with or to showcase at a guild event, it promises to shine.

Quilt Details:
  • Finished Size: 63" x 81"
  • Designer: Wendy Sheppard
  • Fabric Lines: Wildwood Way and Malam Batiks from RJR Fabrics
The design centers around an array of classic star blocks, each framed and rotated to create movement and visual interest. The batik fabrics lend a luminous, watercolor effect that mimics the beauty of stargazing on a clear night in the woods. Whether you stick with the featured collections or mix in your own favorite batiks, this quilt delivers dramatic results.

Construction Notes:
The Star Gazer Quilt is constructed using traditional piecing techniques. You'll be working with flying geese, half-square triangles, and square-in-a-square blocks—so accurate cutting and piecing are key.

Some helpful tips:
  • Use chain piecing to speed up repetitive steps.
  • Label your pieces carefully—there are multiple units that look similar.
  • Press seams open or to the side, depending on bulk, to help align points neatly.
  • Use a design wall or floor layout to keep track of star rotations and block orientation.
Wendy’s pattern includes detailed diagrams, fabric placement charts, and cutting instructions to guide you through each step.

Fabric Selection Tips:
While the original uses the rich, earthy tones of Wildwood Way and the saturated beauty of Malam Batiks, this pattern is highly versatile:
  • Try deep jewel tones for a moody night-sky effect.
  • Experiment with ombré gradients for extra movement.
  • Use scraps or fat quarters for a truly scrappy starry sky.
Who Is This Quilt For?
The Star Gazer Quilt is a great fit for confident beginners who have some experience with block assembly and want to stretch their skills. It's also a perfect project for seasoned quilters looking for a satisfying layout that brings batiks to life.

The Star Gazer Quilt is more than just a beautiful pattern—it's a celebration of color, symmetry, and the timeless allure of star blocks. Wendy Sheppard has once again delivered a design that speaks to the heart of quilting, and this quilt truly shines when made with bold, expressive fabrics.

If you're dreaming of a quilt that captures the magic of the night sky and the serenity of the natural world, this one’s for you,

Happy quilting—and may your stitches always point toward the stars!

Nordic Heart Quilt Block

Nordic Heart Quilt Block FREE PDF PATTERN by The Crafty Quilter.
Nordic Heart Quilt Block

The Nordic Heart Quilt Block is a charming design that combines traditional Scandinavian motifs with modern quilting techniques. Inspired by the Norwegian "flettet julekurv" or woven Christmas heart basket, this block brings a touch of Nordic warmth to your quilting projects.

Crafting the Nordic Heart Block:
This block features a 9-patch center flanked by two appliquéd half-circles, forming the iconic heart shape. The 9-patch is constructed from red and red/white print strips, while the heart lobes are created using a turned-edge appliqué method. This technique involves stitching fusible interfacing to fabric, trimming, turning right side out, and then appliquéing onto a white background. The result is a crisp, clean heart shape that adds depth and texture to the block.

Materials and Assembly:

To create the Nordic Heart block, you'll need:
Red and red/white print fabrics
White fabric
Fusible interfacing
Basic sewing supplies

Begin by assembling the 9-patch center, then prepare the heart lobes using the turned-edge appliqué method. Once the lobes are appliquéd onto the white rectangles, trim them to size and assemble the block by joining the 9-patch, heart lobes, and a white square. The finished block measures 4" square (unfinished).

Design Versatility:
The Nordic Heart block's design is versatile, making it suitable for various projects. Whether you're creating a festive wall hanging, a cozy table runner, or incorporating it into a larger quilt, this block adds a touch of Scandinavian charm. Experiment with different fabric combinations to achieve the desired look, from traditional red and white to more contemporary palettes.

Diamond Charms Quilt

Diamond Charms Quilt Free Tutorial
Diamond Charms Quilt

Susan Stuklis's "Diamond Charms Quilt," featured on her blog Susie's Scraps, exemplifies this creative process. This pattern ingeniously utilizes leftover fabric strips, turning them into vibrant diamond-shaped blocks that come together to form a stunning quilt.

The construction of the Diamond Charms Quilt begins with 5-inch foundation squares, onto which fabric strings are pieced. By marking 2-inch points from the corners of each square, a central diamond shape is defined, and the surrounding areas are filled with colorful fabric strips. This method not only stabilizes the block but also allows for a dynamic interplay of colors and patterns, especially when mixing solids and prints. Once four of these units are assembled, they create a larger block that showcases a central white diamond, adding a striking focal point to the quilt.

What makes this pattern particularly appealing is its adaptability. Whether you're aiming for a baby quilt or a full-sized bedspread, you can adjust the number of blocks to suit your desired size. Additionally, the use of fabric scraps means each quilt is unique, reflecting the quilter's personal fabric history and aesthetic preferences.

Materials and Preparation:
To begin, gather an assortment of fabric strings—narrow strips of fabric typically leftover from previous projects. These will be pieced onto 5" foundation squares; white homespun fabric is recommended for the foundation, but any light-colored fabric will suffice. The number of foundation squares needed depends on the desired size of the final quilt.

Constructing the Diamond Charms Block:
Each block is created by piecing fabric strings onto the foundation squares in a specific manner:

  • Marking the Foundation: On a 5" foundation square, measure 2" from one corner along two adjacent sides and mark these points. Draw lines connecting these marks to the opposite corner, creating a central diamond shape that will remain unpieced.
  • Adding Fabric Strings: Place a fabric string right side down, aligning its edge with one of the drawn lines and overlapping it by ¼". Sew the string in place using a ¼" seam allowance. Flip the string right side up and finger press. Continue adding strings in this manner, overlapping each previous string by ¼" and pressing after each addition, until the area outside the central diamond is filled.
  • Completing the Block: Repeat the string piecing process on the opposite side of the central diamond. Once both sides are complete, press the block thoroughly and trim it to match the original 5" foundation square.
Combining four of these units with the unpieced corners meeting at the center forms the complete Diamond Charms block, showcasing a prominent diamond motif.

Design Flexibility:
The Diamond Charms Quilt Block offers ample opportunity for personalization. By varying the colors, patterns, and widths of the fabric strings, each block can achieve a unique appearance. Incorporating both solids and prints can add depth and dimension to the design. Additionally, adjusting the size of the foundation squares allows for customization of the block size to suit different projects.

Midnight Stars Quilt

Midnight Stars Quilt Free Tutorial designed by Heather Kojan for Moda Bake Shop
Midnight Stars Quilt

When you are in love with star quilts and strong contrast, the Midnight Stars Quilt which is made by Heather Kojan is such a project that reveals well the dramatic effect of light and dark fabrics. This quilt was designed on layer cakes, so the nighttime look of the block is bold, and the four oversized star blocks would make a 72" x 72" lap - or throw-size quilt.

The reason that Quilters Love Midnight Stars:
The Midnight Stars Quilt will be remembered due to the simplicity of its piecing half-square triangles and considered use of dark and light fabrics. This contrast makes the stars look glowing like it was like twinkling in a midnight sky.

The design also has only four big star blocks as opposed to dozens of smaller stars in the design, and is therefore easier to sew without losing the visual effect. It is perfect to quilters who may be not fond of new piecing methods but desire a quilt with a dramatic design.

Materials & Preparation:
You will need to make the Midnight Stars Quilt and you will need:
  • 2 Layers Cakes(r) of fabric that you prefer (e.g. the original was made out of Little Black Dress 2)
  • Lighter contrasting background fabric.
  • Accent fabric (a small print of black may be used to add some depth)
  • Batting sized to at least 80'' x 80''
  • Supporting cloths amounting to 4 yards.

Sort out your squares of layer cake before sewing, into light and dark piles, keeping the richest of the dark prints to the star points, and the lightest to the background. One may use medium prints in the background or to accent.

Construction Highlights:

1. Half-Square Triangles (HSTs):
Half and quarter 32 dark and light squares to form HST pairs. Place them on a design wall so that you have lights and darks. Apply to the diagonal, sew seams to the darker cloth, and cut to 91/2 blocks.

2. Block Layout:
The four large stars are made of trimmed HSTs and 10 sq. cut down to 91/2. Placement is paramount - be slow about positioning stars so that the contrast would be even throughout the quilt top.

3. Assembly:
You may sew the quilt in rows or construct individual large units of the star, and assemble them subsequently. When pressing, remember to smooth the seams, pin the intersections particularly where star points are, in order to maintain sharp points.

Quilting & Finishing:
After the top is finished and covered with backing and batting quilt as you desire. The free-motion or straight-line quilting can be used to give texture that embellishes the star shapes. Complete with your favorite binding - the original one has a plain frame framed with a black dot on cream.

Design Tips:
  • Bold Contrast: The most noticeable thing about this quilt is the bold contrasts; select lights and darks in such a way that there is an obvious definition of the shapes of the stars.
  • Layout First: Take time at the design wall - any time wasted at the design wall can be saved at the sewing machine.
  • Bias Edges: long diagonal edges of HSTs are stretchable, therefore sew and press carefully to keep their shape.
