The Cathedral Windows Quilt

Cathedral Windows Quilt made by Emily Sandoval of Quiltish -Quilts & stuff-, The Tutorial designed By Abby Holverson
The Cathedral Windows Quilt by Emily Sandoval of Quiltish -Quilts & stuff-

Quilting has long been a beautiful expression of both creativity and craftsmanship, and few quilt styles capture that blend more dramatically than the Cathedral Windows Quilt. Designed by Abby Holverson and shared on Instructables, this stunning quilt is inspired by the intricate stained glass windows seen in centuries-old cathedrals—and it's just as breathtaking in fabric as it is in stone and glass.

As a quilter, I’ve always admired the dimensional beauty and folded fabric technique used in cathedral windows. It’s one of those projects that combines sewing precision with visual impact, resulting in a quilt that feels both luxurious and nostalgic.

What Makes Cathedral Windows So Special?
Unlike traditional pieced quilts that are layered with batting and backing, the Cathedral Windows Quilt is created with a unique origami-style folding method. Each block is constructed by folding squares of fabric in a specific way that builds the quilt top, backing, and structure all at once—no additional batting required.

The arched “windows” are then completed by sewing curved edges over colorful inserts, which appear like radiant panes of stained glass. The final result is a dimensional, tactile work of art.

Materials You’ll Need:
Abby’s tutorial keeps it simple and approachable. You’ll need:
  • A solid background fabric (traditionally white or cream)
  • A variety of colorful prints for the “windows”
  • Thread and basic sewing supplies
  • An iron for all the precise pressing that this pattern requires
  • A sewing machine (though some choose to finish parts by hand for that heirloom feel)
One great aspect of this quilt is that you can start small. Make a single block, a wall hanging, or even a pillow to explore the technique before committing to a full quilt.

Construction Tips:
Here are a few helpful tips I’ve found when working with Cathedral Windows:
  • Precision pressing is key. You’ll be folding and ironing multiple layers, so accurate creases make everything align perfectly.
  • Use a fabric with a bit of body. Quilting cotton works great, but make sure it’s not too stiff or too thin.
  • Work in sections. Building this quilt block by block makes it manageable and more enjoyable.
  • Add color play. Choose window fabrics that contrast beautifully with your background for the most eye-catching effect.
Abby’s step-by-step tutorial on Instructables is thorough and easy to follow, with detailed photos guiding you from the first fold to the final stitch.

Why Try Cathedral Windows?
If you’re a quilter looking to step away from traditional patchwork and try something more sculptural, this technique offers a completely different kind of sewing experience. It’s perfect for:
  • Quilters who enjoy hand-finishing or visible topstitching
  • Anyone looking to make a show-stopping quilt without batting or binding
  • Those who love mixing solids with bold, playful prints

The Cathedral Windows Quilt designed by Abby Holverson is not just a quilting project—it’s a conversation piece. With its rich history and elegant design, this quilt style offers something deeply satisfying for those who love detailed, meditative sewing. Whether you make a pillow or a full-size quilt, you’ll be preserving a classic quilting tradition while making something uniquely your own.

Star Gazer Quilt

Star Gazer Quilt Free Pattern
Star Gazer Quilt

Every once in a while, a quilt pattern comes along that stops you in your tracks—and the Star Gazer Quilt by Wendy Sheppard does just that. Designed with RJR Fabrics’ Wildwood Way and Malam Batiks collections, this project beautifully blends tradition with a fresh, nature-inspired palette. With its thoughtful construction and stunning interplay of star blocks and batik fabrics, it’s a must-make for quilters who love vibrant color and precise piecing.

As a quilter, I find Wendy Sheppard’s designs both elegant and approachable. Her Star Gazer Quilt offers a harmonious balance between complexity and clarity—making it suitable for intermediate quilters ready for a rewarding challenge. Whether you’re creating this quilt to cozy up with or to showcase at a guild event, it promises to shine.

Quilt Details:
  • Finished Size: 63" x 81"
  • Designer: Wendy Sheppard
  • Fabric Lines: Wildwood Way and Malam Batiks from RJR Fabrics
The design centers around an array of classic star blocks, each framed and rotated to create movement and visual interest. The batik fabrics lend a luminous, watercolor effect that mimics the beauty of stargazing on a clear night in the woods. Whether you stick with the featured collections or mix in your own favorite batiks, this quilt delivers dramatic results.

Construction Notes:
The Star Gazer Quilt is constructed using traditional piecing techniques. You'll be working with flying geese, half-square triangles, and square-in-a-square blocks—so accurate cutting and piecing are key.

Some helpful tips:
  • Use chain piecing to speed up repetitive steps.
  • Label your pieces carefully—there are multiple units that look similar.
  • Press seams open or to the side, depending on bulk, to help align points neatly.
  • Use a design wall or floor layout to keep track of star rotations and block orientation.
Wendy’s pattern includes detailed diagrams, fabric placement charts, and cutting instructions to guide you through each step.

Fabric Selection Tips:
While the original uses the rich, earthy tones of Wildwood Way and the saturated beauty of Malam Batiks, this pattern is highly versatile:
  • Try deep jewel tones for a moody night-sky effect.
  • Experiment with ombré gradients for extra movement.
  • Use scraps or fat quarters for a truly scrappy starry sky.
Who Is This Quilt For?
The Star Gazer Quilt is a great fit for confident beginners who have some experience with block assembly and want to stretch their skills. It's also a perfect project for seasoned quilters looking for a satisfying layout that brings batiks to life.

The Star Gazer Quilt is more than just a beautiful pattern—it's a celebration of color, symmetry, and the timeless allure of star blocks. Wendy Sheppard has once again delivered a design that speaks to the heart of quilting, and this quilt truly shines when made with bold, expressive fabrics.

If you're dreaming of a quilt that captures the magic of the night sky and the serenity of the natural world, this one’s for you,

Happy quilting—and may your stitches always point toward the stars!

Nordic Heart Quilt Block

Nordic Heart Quilt Block FREE PDF PATTERN by The Crafty Quilter.
Nordic Heart Quilt Block

The Nordic Heart Quilt Block is a charming design that combines traditional Scandinavian motifs with modern quilting techniques. Inspired by the Norwegian "flettet julekurv" or woven Christmas heart basket, this block brings a touch of Nordic warmth to your quilting projects.

Crafting the Nordic Heart Block:
This block features a 9-patch center flanked by two appliquéd half-circles, forming the iconic heart shape. The 9-patch is constructed from red and red/white print strips, while the heart lobes are created using a turned-edge appliqué method. This technique involves stitching fusible interfacing to fabric, trimming, turning right side out, and then appliquéing onto a white background. The result is a crisp, clean heart shape that adds depth and texture to the block.

Materials and Assembly:

To create the Nordic Heart block, you'll need:
Red and red/white print fabrics
White fabric
Fusible interfacing
Basic sewing supplies

Begin by assembling the 9-patch center, then prepare the heart lobes using the turned-edge appliqué method. Once the lobes are appliquéd onto the white rectangles, trim them to size and assemble the block by joining the 9-patch, heart lobes, and a white square. The finished block measures 4" square (unfinished).

Design Versatility:
The Nordic Heart block's design is versatile, making it suitable for various projects. Whether you're creating a festive wall hanging, a cozy table runner, or incorporating it into a larger quilt, this block adds a touch of Scandinavian charm. Experiment with different fabric combinations to achieve the desired look, from traditional red and white to more contemporary palettes.

Diamond Charms Quilt

Diamond Charms Quilt Free Tutorial
Diamond Charms Quilt

Susan Stuklis's "Diamond Charms Quilt," featured on her blog Susie's Scraps, exemplifies this creative process. This pattern ingeniously utilizes leftover fabric strips, turning them into vibrant diamond-shaped blocks that come together to form a stunning quilt.

The construction of the Diamond Charms Quilt begins with 5-inch foundation squares, onto which fabric strings are pieced. By marking 2-inch points from the corners of each square, a central diamond shape is defined, and the surrounding areas are filled with colorful fabric strips. This method not only stabilizes the block but also allows for a dynamic interplay of colors and patterns, especially when mixing solids and prints. Once four of these units are assembled, they create a larger block that showcases a central white diamond, adding a striking focal point to the quilt.

What makes this pattern particularly appealing is its adaptability. Whether you're aiming for a baby quilt or a full-sized bedspread, you can adjust the number of blocks to suit your desired size. Additionally, the use of fabric scraps means each quilt is unique, reflecting the quilter's personal fabric history and aesthetic preferences.

Materials and Preparation:
To begin, gather an assortment of fabric strings—narrow strips of fabric typically leftover from previous projects. These will be pieced onto 5" foundation squares; white homespun fabric is recommended for the foundation, but any light-colored fabric will suffice. The number of foundation squares needed depends on the desired size of the final quilt.

Constructing the Diamond Charms Block:
Each block is created by piecing fabric strings onto the foundation squares in a specific manner:

  • Marking the Foundation: On a 5" foundation square, measure 2" from one corner along two adjacent sides and mark these points. Draw lines connecting these marks to the opposite corner, creating a central diamond shape that will remain unpieced.
  • Adding Fabric Strings: Place a fabric string right side down, aligning its edge with one of the drawn lines and overlapping it by ¼". Sew the string in place using a ¼" seam allowance. Flip the string right side up and finger press. Continue adding strings in this manner, overlapping each previous string by ¼" and pressing after each addition, until the area outside the central diamond is filled.
  • Completing the Block: Repeat the string piecing process on the opposite side of the central diamond. Once both sides are complete, press the block thoroughly and trim it to match the original 5" foundation square.
Combining four of these units with the unpieced corners meeting at the center forms the complete Diamond Charms block, showcasing a prominent diamond motif.

Design Flexibility:
The Diamond Charms Quilt Block offers ample opportunity for personalization. By varying the colors, patterns, and widths of the fabric strings, each block can achieve a unique appearance. Incorporating both solids and prints can add depth and dimension to the design. Additionally, adjusting the size of the foundation squares allows for customization of the block size to suit different projects.

Midnight Stars Quilt

Midnight Stars Quilt Free Tutorial designed by Heather Kojan for Moda Bake Shop
Midnight Stars Quilt

When you are in love with star quilts and strong contrast, the Midnight Stars Quilt which is made by Heather Kojan is such a project that reveals well the dramatic effect of light and dark fabrics. This quilt was designed on layer cakes, so the nighttime look of the block is bold, and the four oversized star blocks would make a 72" x 72" lap - or throw-size quilt.

The reason that Quilters Love Midnight Stars:
The Midnight Stars Quilt will be remembered due to the simplicity of its piecing half-square triangles and considered use of dark and light fabrics. This contrast makes the stars look glowing like it was like twinkling in a midnight sky.

The design also has only four big star blocks as opposed to dozens of smaller stars in the design, and is therefore easier to sew without losing the visual effect. It is perfect to quilters who may be not fond of new piecing methods but desire a quilt with a dramatic design.

Materials & Preparation:
You will need to make the Midnight Stars Quilt and you will need:
  • 2 Layers Cakes(r) of fabric that you prefer (e.g. the original was made out of Little Black Dress 2)
  • Lighter contrasting background fabric.
  • Accent fabric (a small print of black may be used to add some depth)
  • Batting sized to at least 80'' x 80''
  • Supporting cloths amounting to 4 yards.

Sort out your squares of layer cake before sewing, into light and dark piles, keeping the richest of the dark prints to the star points, and the lightest to the background. One may use medium prints in the background or to accent.

Construction Highlights:

1. Half-Square Triangles (HSTs):
Half and quarter 32 dark and light squares to form HST pairs. Place them on a design wall so that you have lights and darks. Apply to the diagonal, sew seams to the darker cloth, and cut to 91/2 blocks.

2. Block Layout:
The four large stars are made of trimmed HSTs and 10 sq. cut down to 91/2. Placement is paramount - be slow about positioning stars so that the contrast would be even throughout the quilt top.

3. Assembly:
You may sew the quilt in rows or construct individual large units of the star, and assemble them subsequently. When pressing, remember to smooth the seams, pin the intersections particularly where star points are, in order to maintain sharp points.

Quilting & Finishing:
After the top is finished and covered with backing and batting quilt as you desire. The free-motion or straight-line quilting can be used to give texture that embellishes the star shapes. Complete with your favorite binding - the original one has a plain frame framed with a black dot on cream.

Design Tips:
  • Bold Contrast: The most noticeable thing about this quilt is the bold contrasts; select lights and darks in such a way that there is an obvious definition of the shapes of the stars.
  • Layout First: Take time at the design wall - any time wasted at the design wall can be saved at the sewing machine.
  • Bias Edges: long diagonal edges of HSTs are stretchable, therefore sew and press carefully to keep their shape.

Storm at Sea Quilt

Storm at Sea Quilt by Julie's Quilts and Costumes

Few quilt designs capture movement and flow quite like the timeless Storm at Sea pattern. With its interplay of square and rectangular units that cleverly create the illusion of curves, this quilt block has been beloved by generations of quilters. AccuQuilt brings new life and ease to this traditional design with their GO! Classic Storm at Sea Throw Quilt Pattern, designed specifically to pair with their precision cutting dies.

As a quilter who enjoys both heritage and efficiency, I was immediately drawn to this pattern. The classic look is preserved, but with a simplified approach that takes the guesswork—and hand fatigue—out of the cutting process. Whether you're tackling this pattern for the first time or revisiting it with fresh eyes, AccuQuilt’s version makes it easier than ever to achieve sharp points and precise alignment.

Why the Storm at Sea Quilt Stands Out
At first glance, the quilt appears to have flowing curves and a sense of undulating motion—but there’s not a single curved piece involved! It’s all about smart placement of geometric shapes. This optical illusion effect makes it a joy to sew and a real showstopper once complete.

The GO! Storm at Sea pattern uses:
  • GO! Storm at Sea Die Set
  • GO! Qube Mix & Match Block System (8” or 10”)
  • Coordinating fabrics (solids or prints)
  • Basic sewing tools and quilting supplies
By using the AccuQuilt cutting system, each piece fits together precisely, reducing fabric waste and ensuring your points match beautifully.

Construction Overview
While the Storm at Sea quilt might seem intricate, it’s all about building blocks step by step:

1. Cutting with Confidence – With the die-cut system, each triangle, square, and rectangle is perfectly measured. No measuring mistakes or trimming needed.

2. Block Assembly – The pattern guides you through piecing together square-in-a-square blocks, diamond shapes, and rectangles to create the illusion of curves and waves.

3. Layout & Rows – Once the blocks are complete, they’re arranged in a grid layout that creates movement across the quilt.

4. Finishing Touches – Add borders, quilt as desired, and bind to complete your masterpiece.

The result is a quilt that looks far more complicated than it is—perfect for gifting, showcasing, or even entering in your next quilt show.

Design Ideas:
  • Go Nautical: Use ocean blues, grays, and whites to echo the sea-inspired theme.
  • Bold and Modern: Try high-contrast solids like black and white or jewel tones for a modern twist.
  • Scrappy Storm: Mix up your fabric stash for a vibrant, eclectic version.

The Storm at Sea Quilt is a true classic that continues to captivate quilters with its beauty and complexity. With AccuQuilt’s thoughtful pattern and cutting dies, this once-daunting design becomes approachable and fun. You can confidently create a quilt that looks impressive but feels achievable—even for intermediate quilters.

Lemoyne Star Block Quilt

Lemoyne Star Block Quilt Free Pattern
Lemoyne Star Block Quilt

The LeMoyne Star Block, featured as the centerpiece of the Sarah’s Star quilt, is a timeless design reimagined by Margaret Leuwen, with detailed instructions provided by Jeanne Knapp and Lindsey Leuwen. This block combines traditional aesthetics with modern piecing techniques, making it accessible for quilters of various skill levels.

A Tribute to Heritage:
The Sarah’s Star quilt holds sentimental value, named after Margaret Leuwen’s granddaughter, Sarah, who was named in honor of Margaret's own grandmother. This personal connection infuses the project with warmth and a sense of legacy, reflecting the generational bonds often celebrated in quilting. The LeMoyne Star, with its eight-pointed symmetry, serves as a fitting centerpiece, symbolizing unity and continuity.

Materials and Cutting Guide:
To construct the 14½" LeMoyne Star block, you'll need the following fabrics:
  • Dark Purple: Four 3¾" x 7½" rectangles and four 4¼" squares
  • Light Purple: Four 3¾" squares
  • Light Pink: Four 3¾" x 7½" rectangles and four 4¼" squares
These selections allow for a harmonious blend of colors, enhancing the star's visual impact.

Step-by-Step Assembly:
  1. Create Unit A: Attach a light pink 3¾" square to one end of each dark purple rectangle, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line on the square, sew along it, trim ¼" from the seam, and press open.
  2. Create Unit B: Repeat the process by attaching a light purple 3¾" square to one end of each light pink rectangle, following the same sewing and pressing steps.
  3. Add Squares: Sew a 4¼" light pink square to the triangle end of each Unit A, and a 4¼" dark purple square to the triangle end of each Unit B. Align edges carefully, stitch, and press open.
  4. Form Heart Units: Pair each Unit A with a Unit B, right sides together, aligning seams. Draw a diagonal line across the "V" of the heart shape, sew along the line, trim ¼" from the seam, and press open to reveal a diamond unit.
  5. Assemble the Block: Arrange the four diamond units to form the LeMoyne Star. Sew them together, press seams open, and ensure the block measures 14½" square.

These instructions are adapted from the original pattern, which provides comprehensive guidance for each step.

Design Considerations:
The LeMoyne Star's versatility allows for creative expression through fabric choices. Consider using contrasting colors to emphasize the star's points or a monochromatic palette for a subtle, elegant look. Incorporating prints or batiks can add texture and depth, making each block unique

The Ruby Reds Quilt, designed by Lila Taylor Scott for AllPeopleQuilt, is one of those patterns that immediately draws you in. With its sophisticated blend of red tones and traditional piecing, this quilt has all the makings of a future heirloom while still being a joy to create.

Perfect for intermediate quilters or confident beginners eager to challenge themselves, the Ruby Reds Quilt combines classic piecing techniques with a strong visual impact. The pattern celebrates the beauty of red fabrics, but can be easily customized to suit your personal taste or stash favorites.

A Love Letter to Red!
The standout feature of this quilt is, of course, the use of deep ruby reds accented by soft creams and neutrals. These hues work together to form a balanced and striking layout, where the reds form star-like medallions across the quilt top. Each block radiates warmth and vibrancy, creating a quilt that feels both luxurious and inviting.

The pattern includes instructions for creating a 69" x 69" throw, which makes it a beautiful addition to a couch, chair, or wall, or a special gift for a loved one.

Construction Overview:
Lila Taylor Scott’s instructions are thoughtfully written and easy to follow. Here’s a simplified outline of how the quilt comes together:

1. Fabric Selection: Choose a range of red prints to add variety and depth. Pair them with cream, beige, or soft gray for contrast.

2. Block Assembly: The quilt features pieced blocks composed of half-square triangles, rectangles, and squares. Careful pressing and accurate cutting will help these blocks come together beautifully.

3. Layout & Borders: The blocks are arranged to create a star pattern across the quilt top. A final border frames the entire quilt, pulling everything together into a cohesive and polished piece.

This quilt shines with traditional charm while allowing you to put your own creative stamp on the fabric and finishing choices.

Tips for a Stunning Finish:
  • Scrappy Reds: Use a mix of red fabrics—solids, prints, and tone-on-tone—to give your quilt extra texture and life.
  • Contrast Matters: Make sure your background fabrics are light enough to let the reds pop.
  • Precision Counts: Accurate cutting and ¼" seam allowances will keep your points sharp and blocks aligned.
Whether you're planning this as a Valentine’s Day project, a holiday throw, or a year-round stunner, the Ruby Reds Quilt offers the perfect blend of classic style and modern flair.

The Ruby Reds Quilt is a striking and heartfelt design that lets the timeless elegance of red fabrics take center stage. With thoughtful construction and plenty of opportunity for fabric play, this quilt is bound to be a favorite for both the maker and the recipient.

Stepping Stones Quilt

Stepping Stones Quilt Block FREE PATTERN by Quilting Daily
Stepping Stones Quilt

Every so often, we come across a quilt block that feels timeless, versatile, and just plain fun to make. That’s exactly how I felt when I discovered the Stepping Stones Quilt Block, a beautiful design by Quilting Daily. Whether you’re a beginner building your skills or a seasoned quilter seeking a fresh project, this block offers a clean, geometric style that’s ideal for playing with contrast and color placement.

Inspired by the look of a winding path, each block forms a visual “step” in a quilt that can be as serene or as bold as you choose. With just squares, rectangles, and thoughtful fabric selection, you can create a layout that draws the eye across your quilt in a rhythmic and soothing motion.

Simple Shapes, Striking Effect!
At its heart, the Stepping Stones block is made up of 2.5" squares and rectangles, making it an ideal pattern for using up precuts or scraps. The magic of the design comes from the high-contrast placement: light centers framed by dark "steps" that form a subtle chain or path as the blocks come together.

This kind of layout is a favorite among modern quilters and traditionalists alike—it gives structure to your quilt while still allowing your fabric choices to shine.

Construction Overview:
Lorna’s tutorial is clear, concise, and beginner-friendly. Here's a quick summary of the steps:

1. Cutting the Fabric: You'll need a mix of light and dark fabrics. Lorna uses black for the stepping stones and colorful prints for the centers, but you can reverse or mix this up depending on your stash.

2. Assembling the Block: Sew the center squares, side strips, and corners to create each unit. It’s a classic layout, but with a twist: the steps you’re creating add flow and direction across your quilt top.

3. Final Assembly: Once blocks are made, lay them out in alternating directions to create the pathway effect.

Each block finishes at 10 inches, so it’s easy to calculate how many you’ll need for your desired quilt size.

Tips for Personalizing Your Quilt:
  • Scrappy Look: Mix various light and dark prints for a more dynamic, patchwork vibe.
  • Monochromatic Scheme: Use shades of a single color for a soothing, tonal effect.
  • Bold Contrast: Choose black and white for a dramatic, graphic look.
The design is flexible enough to work as a baby quilt, lap throw, or even a full bedspread. You could also use just a few blocks for pillows or a table runner.

Stepping Stones Quilt Block is a beautiful balance of simplicity and style. It’s a design that invites creativity while remaining approachable for quilters of all levels. Whether you’re digging into your scrap bin or using coordinated fabrics, this block brings structure and movement to your quilt in the most charming way.

Pineapple Blossom Blocks Star Quilt

If you’re looking for a fun, stash-busting quilt block that’s bursting with movement and charm, the Pineapple Blossom block by Bonnie K. Hunter is a brilliant place to start. Known for her scrappy style and practical techniques, Bonnie brings new life to traditional blocks, and this one is no exception. Featured on her beloved Quiltville site, the Pineapple Blossom tutorial is easy to follow and delightfully adaptable—perfect for quilters who want to make the most of their fabric scraps.

But here’s where it gets even better: when assembled with a thoughtful layout, these blocks can come together to form beautiful secondary star patterns. It’s a satisfying visual payoff that makes your quilt top shine without requiring complex piecing.

About the Pineapple Blossom Block
Bonnie’s version of the Pineapple Blossom isn’t a classic pineapple block in the traditional sense. Instead, it cleverly mimics the layered, radiating look with a much simpler construction process. Each block starts with a basic center square, surrounded by strips and corner triangles. When the blocks are joined together, diagonal lines form that give the illusion of something far more intricate.

This construction method is beginner-friendly but has enough variety to keep even seasoned quilters engaged. And as Bonnie suggests, this is a perfect block for using up leftover 2.5" strips and random scraps—making it a great choice for a scrappy or controlled color palette.

Key Features of the Tutorial:
Bonnie provides a full photo-based walkthrough, complete with:
  • Cutting instructions for multiple block sizes
  • Tips for chain piecing and sewing efficiently
  • A clever bonus triangle trick, letting you save and use your trimmed corners
  • Diagrams that show how blocks can be arranged for a star layout
By rotating the blocks and paying attention to fabric placement, you’ll notice lovely secondary stars emerge throughout your quilt top. It’s a great reminder of how small design decisions can transform a quilt’s entire look.

Why You’ll Love Making This Quilt
Whether you’re quilting from your scrap bins or working from fat quarters, the Pineapple Blossom block provides maximum visual interest with minimal stress. The rhythm of the block makes it ideal for chain piecing, and the project scales up quickly. You can make a few blocks for a table runner or go all-in for a stunning bed-size quilt.

Plus, the option to turn trimmed triangles into coordinating pinwheels or border blocks means nothing goes to waste—a hallmark of Bonnie’s sustainable quilting approach.

Bonnie K. Hunter’s Pineapple Blossom Quilt tutorial is a wonderful resource for quilters who want a dynamic, scrappy design that’s both simple and stunning. With just strips, squares, and some clever piecing, you’ll end up with a quilt that sparkles with movement and charm—especially when the star layout comes into play.

Curve it Up Quilt (Block 7)

Curve it Up Quilt (Block 7) designed by Dueling Threads
Curve it Up Quilt (Block 7)

A Warm Turn on an Old Favorite:
Curve It Up Log Cabin block (Block 7 in Sew Kind of Wonderful's book) begins traditionally enough as a log cabin—a central "hearth" square embedded among rows of fabric "logs." Tradition holds that a red center equals the hearth, and yellow equals a welcome light in the window

Piecing Magic with a Twist:
What makes this block stand out is the sweeping curve that arcs around that center. Instead of square-in-square, you’ll use the Quick Curve Ruler to cut gracefully tapered log pieces. A tapered ¼″ seam starts and ends 1¾″ down the curve's edge, blending tradition and fluid design

Step-by-Step Overview:

1. Cut the Curved Logs:
Use the Quick Curve Ruler to trim strips with a gentle curve.

2. Sew with Tapered Seam:
As you sew curved log to center, start 1¾″ from edge, taper to ¼″ seam most of the way around the curve, and then taper back out on the other side

3. Square Up:
Trim with square-up ruler when stitched for precise alignment.

4. Repeat Around:
Continue tapering, curved logs around center to complete the block.

Why You'll Love It:
  • Scrap-Friendly: Great way to use up scraps of fabric—log cabins are log cabin love by pack rats anyway, and the curves add a cute touch
  • Engaging Challenge: The curve is fun, but the ruler and cut-sew-square-up process make it accessible for newbs
  • Visual Impact: Piling up a number of blocks, and your quilt explodes into bright curves—see Dueling Threads' blog and Sew Kind of Wonderful's mock-ups of the bright effect

Tips for Success:
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Curves can be picky—practice a test curve with scraps to achieve the ¼″ taper transition perfectly.
  • Lean on the Ruler: A Quick Curve Ruler is essential; it ensures uniform, accurate curves without guessing
  • Embrace Personalization: Choose your center color thoughtfully—red, yellow, or pink—to impart personal meaning to every block.

Get the Pattern & Supplies:
Block & Book: Curve It Up by Sew Kind of Wonderful is sold on their website, quilt shops, and online retailers

Ruler: Required is the Quick Curve Ruler (12×7″). Sew Kind of Wonderful, Massdrop, Amazon, and quilt stores sell it.

Final Thoughts
The Curve It Up Log Cabin block is the perfect combination of tradition and innovation. Whether it's the narrative symbol of the center or the smooth, swooping curves that appeal to you, it's a charming and visually stimulating project. It's perfect for leftovers, developing curved-piecing techniques, and creating a quilt with a distinctly modern feel on a classic.

Happy stitching—and may your heart and hearth be warm with every block!

How to make a Handkerchief Quilt

How to make a Handkerchief Quilt by Rhonda Dort
How to make a Handkerchief Quilt

As quilters, we often look for ways to weave history, emotion, and artistry into a single piece—and few projects accomplish that quite like a handkerchief quilt. These delicate treasures not only showcase our skills but also preserve precious family heirlooms in a beautiful, functional form. If you’ve inherited a box of vintage hankies or collected some over time, Rhonda Dort’s tutorial on making a Handkerchief Quilt with a Custom-Sized Swag Border is a must-read.

Rhonda brings warmth and knowledge to the process, sharing not just the steps but also the heart behind her craft. Her blog post is rich with photographs and thoughtful tips, making the journey approachable even if you're new to working with delicate vintage fabrics.

What Is a Handkerchief Quilt?
A handkerchief quilt is exactly what it sounds like—a quilt made using vintage or decorative handkerchiefs as the focal design elements. These pieces often feature intricate embroidery, lace edges, and soft, fine fabrics that carry memories and character.

Rather than hiding these hankies away in a drawer, Rhonda's technique honors them by placing each one in its own block, beautifully framed with a custom swag border. The result is a quilt that feels like a curated museum of textile art—but made for your home.

Highlights from the Tutorial:
In her tutorial, Rhonda provides a step-by-step approach that covers:
  • Preparing and stabilizing your handkerchiefs – a critical step when dealing with older, more delicate fabrics.
  • Cutting and planning the layout – including how to size your swag borders to perfectly complement each piece.
  • Appliqué tips – Rhonda shares her method of attaching each handkerchief gently and securely.
  • Quilting ideas – how to enhance your design with careful stitching while preserving the hankies’ original beauty.
One of the most valuable aspects of Rhonda’s tutorial is her encouragement to treat each handkerchief as a unique work of art. She reminds us that imperfections are part of their charm—and that quilting is about storytelling as much as technique.

A Thoughtful and Elegant Keepsake:
This project is especially meaningful if you have handkerchiefs passed down through generations. By turning them into a quilt, you’re creating a family keepsake that can be admired, touched, and remembered.

Rhonda’s method ensures your quilt remains elegant and balanced, even if your handkerchiefs vary in size, color, or condition. Her approach is flexible, thoughtful, and deeply personal.

Final Thoughts!
Making a handkerchief quilt is more than just a sewing project—it’s a journey into family history, vintage textiles, and creative expression. Rhonda Dort’s tutorial offers the perfect guidance for quilters who want to embark on this journey with care and confidence.

Whether you plan to make a full quilt, a wall hanging, or even just a single framed block, this tutorial will give you all the tools you need to begin.
