Napa Valley Table Runner

Napa Valley Tablerunner features the Sweet Cherry Wine collection by Blackbird Designs for Moda Fabrics
Napa Valley Table Runner

Table runners are a satisfying project that can go on and on. It's a weekend quick quilt piece that gives you the creative satisfaction of finishing an entire quilt. The Napa Valley Table Runner from Fat Quarter Shop is a table runner for the ages.

Pattern Overview & Dimensions
This pattern, designed as part of the Starburst Jewel Series at Fat Quarter Shop, creates and finishes a large 17 ½" x 62 ½" piece, perfect for displaying at long dining tables, side boards or kitchen islands.

The design is based on four main Napa Valley Blocks that are each 13 ½" x 13 ½" unfinished. Dynamic movement of these blocks comes from the pieced starburst spokes in a pinwheel pattern, clearly articulated by a formal sashing and cornerstone accent squares.

For their fabric highlight, Blackbird Designs used Sweet Cherry Wine.
This original pattern is a perfect way to accentuate the Sweet Cherry Wine collection from Blackbird Designs for Moda Fabrics. Known for its rich, reproduction-style palettes, Blackbird Designs is no exception.

The intense reds, rich chocolate-browns, and muted parchment-toned backgrounds lend the geometric blocks a vintage, home-like charm. The starburst units add a richness to the wine colours, creating a warm contrast to the neutral background fabric.

Key Techniques & Specialized Tools
The multi-angled starburst units are surprisingly easy to piece together thanks to precise strip piecing techniques and special rulers:

  • Creative Grids Starburst 30 Degree Triangle Ruler (CGRISE30): A 30 degree triangle ruler to cut precise A1 units from 10" x 21" pieced strip sets. You will be making 12 sets of strips from the background and block fabrics which equates to 48 identical wedge pieces.
  • Creative Grids 6.5" Quilting Square Ruler (CGR6): A must have for cutting each pieced Napa Valley unit to a precise size of 6 ½" x 6 ½" before joining the blocks together.
  • The blocks are connected with 2 ½” x 13 ½” strips of sashing and 2 ½” cornerstone squares, thus forming a clean lattice which aesthetically balances the bold blocks and helps to keep them separated.

Final Thought
The Napa Valley Table Runner is a precision-picked and beautifully styled table runner. When cut sharp angles are in order, it can be a stressful task, but it doesn't have to be with the Starburst 30 Degree Triangle Ruler! This project will give you a sophisticated, “boutique” style finish whether you opt for a deep vintage red from your stash or follow the original dark color of the Sweet Cherry Wine.
