Hawaiian Waves Quilt for Baby

Fellow quilters! Are you needing your next weekend project, or maybe you are finding your next handmade gift for that special baby shower? I have the ideal design for you! Soaking up the waves today with a gorgeous free baby quilt designed by Cindy Carter - Hawaiian Waves is a beautiful soothing wave pattern.

This lovely baby or lap quilt is originally a 52″ x 52″ quilt created by Cindy for her granddaughter Olivia. The geometry of the movement of the piecing is very clever; the central layout, whether it's a two-color theme or a colorful assortment of scraps, will create a very sweet personalized layout.

These ocean waves may look complicated, but that's not the case! Half-square triangles (HSTs) are a key component of the design, contributing to its fluid movement. Cindy has divided the pattern into 20 small blocks that are divided into two sets: Block A and Block B. They are identical on the front, but use alternate pressing directions. A simple trick to make your seams nest together perfectly, giving you very little bulk in the seams so your sewing machine passes right through the intersections.

For added convenience, the pattern allows for great flexibility of the piecing depending upon your fabric collection. For a classic, crisp, two-color quilt, Cindy suggests using Triangles on a Roll paper templates. The Triangle Magic method is used to chain-piece HSTs efficiently if you prefer to dive into your scraps or use up your favourite fat quarter size pieces.

Finish your quilt top with a flannel or minky backing and you will get a cozy and textured quilt that is ideal for tummy time or for decorating the nursery. So let's grab the rotary cutter and select our favorite tropical or pastel colors and dive into these waves together!
